What can I use for oily skin before putting on my makeup?
Christopher Young is regional education manager for Clinique -- and Clinique knows skin care. So it was only natural that I turned to him for an answer to this ELLE reader's question. Here's what he says:
"There are two schools of thought to keep in mind:
"First, many people with oily skin are concerned with makeup not lasting throughout the day -- nature's natural makeup remover is oil and water, which are both produced in abundance in oily skin. Oil control is the key prior to applying makeup. Be sure to use a little mattifying, oil-free moisturizer prior to applying your makeup -- you'll be glad you did.
"Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel will help to keep the skin feeling fresh and absorb surface oil. In addition, look for a makeup that will also control oil, such as Clinique's Superfit Makeup. Long-wearing makeup is just that because it helps to combat 'nature's natural makeup remover.'
"Second, often, people that are concerned with oiliness are also concerned that their skin and makeup can look dull. There is a happy medium between dullness and shiny -- it's that healthy glow that everyone wants. Exfoliation is the key. Oily skin can tend to look dull because oil acts as 'glue' to dead skin cells, leaving the skin with a lack of radiance. Continuous, targeted and gentle exfoliation will help. Look for products with salicylic acid. Clinique's Turnaround Concentrate will not only give that continuous, targeted and gentle exfoliation, but it will also help to stimulate cell renewal, combatting dullness."
