5 must-see movie and music hotspots in Jamaica

Frenchman's Cove

The movie: Knight and Day, 2010   The location: In Knight and Day, Frenchman’s Cove becomes an off-the-grid hideaway for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, who are on the run from the CIA.   Why I loved it: Because I encountered a very good problem while at Frenchman’s Cove: The Wi-Fi worked perfectly (for Insta-posts!), making it hard to choose between taking snaps and putting down my phone to simply take in the postcard-perfect horizon with my own eyes.   READ MORE: Visiting iconic James Bond filming locations in Jamaica

The Blue Lagoon

The movie: The Blue Lagoon, 1980   The location: Jamaica’s actual Blue Lagoon was the setting of – you guessed it – the coming-of-age adventure saga The Blue Lagoon.   Why I loved it: Because depending on the position of the sun in the sky, the lagoon transforms from turquoise to sapphire to deep indigo. Although diving isn’t allowed, I took a boat around the lagoon to get a closer look at the stunning colour shifts.   READ MORE: Staying at Ian Fleming's GoldenEye estate in Jamaica

Reach Falls

The movie: Cocktail, 1988   The location: Reach Falls was the backdrop for Cocktail’s most romantic scene between Tom Cruise and Elisabeth Shue.   Why I loved it: Because when I was looking for a quiet break from the day’s activities, I found it while floating in the cool river pool at the top of the waterfall. I was surrounded by long liana vines and serenaded by the calls of jungle birds. Who needs Tom Cruise anyway?   READ MORE: Set-jetting in Iceland, the other Hollywood North

5 must-see movie and music hotspots in Jamaica

Geejam Hotel

The musicians: Drake, Florence and the Machine and Gwen Stefani   The location: With all the movies shot in Jamaica, there can be such a thing as too much set-jetting. For a change of pace, do some song-setting instead by visiting the recording studio at Geejam Hotel, where Drake, Florence and the Machine and Gwen Stefani have all laid down tracks.   Why I loved it: Because I got to catch the hotel’s weekly Friday night show: a performance by the Jolly Boys, Jamaica’s oldest and most famous calypso band.   READ MORE: Set-jetting in North Carolina, aka Hollywood East

5 must-see movie and music hotspots in Jamaica

Trident Castle

The album: Reflektor by Arcade Fire, 2013   The location: Arcade Fire rented out the Disney-princess-worthy Trident Castle and turned one of the bedrooms into a recording studio. The Canadian band even filmed the video for “You Already Know” in the master suite.   Why I loved it: Because every room in the castle was a jewel box waiting to be opened. I let my imagination run wild as I descended the spiral staircase into the opulent red dining room and out into the oceanfront courtyard, feeling very much like an eccentric baroness.   READ MORE: Following in the footsteps of James Bond in Jamaica
