Taylor Swift has been reading up on American history in her spare time.

The ‘Love Story’ singer – who is currently on her 99-date Speak Now World Tour – has been spending her free time taking in a book about American political family The Kennedys, and plans to extend her knowledge by indulging in further tomes about the second President of the US, John Adams, and Ellis Island – the gateway where immigrants were traditionally welcomed to the country.

She told Rolling Stone magazine: “I just read a 900-page book called ‘The Kennedy Women’, which dates back to the lineage of the first Kennedys coming from Ireland in the 1800s.

“This morning I bought books about John Adams, [Abraham] Lincoln’s Cabinet, the Founding Fathers and Ellis Island.”

The 21-year-old beauty – who was nearly reduced to tears when she attempted to visit the New York Historical Society, but found it to be closed – joked to fans on twitter she was doing some sophisticated reading, but tweeted a picture of her reading a ‘Cuddly Kittens’ book.

She wrote: “Just doing some pre-show sophisticated reading. Very serious material here.”

Taylor has also been extending her musical talents as she played a version of ‘Eminem’s’ track ‘Loose Yourself’, complete with rapping and accompanied by guitar during a show in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
