Green Day have “a ton of new songs” for their upcoming album.

Lead singer and songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong has explained the punk rocker’s ninth studio album will sound “fresh and high-energy”.

Writing on his twitter page, he said: “Ok here’s the scoop. [Green Day] has been jamming new songs everyday. There’s a ton of new songs. The direction is fresh and hi energy. Feels great. (sic)”

The 39-year-old rocker also said bandmates bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool are “having the best time” laying down tracks for the new album.

Billie added: “I don’t want to give away too much but just know that me, mike, tre and Jason are collaborating and having the best time playing music.

“And that’s not bulls**t!! (sic)”

The band recently saw their musical ‘American Idiot’ – which was based on the group’s concept album of the same name – close on Broadway, but Billie explained he was proud of the way the production had “moved” people.

He said: “It moves people. I think it’s the same reason why you would want to go see a band play live, you know? It’s a record that’s coming to life, it’s in your face, and it’s a story.

“That’s what ‘American Idiot’ does. That’s what it does in the music, and that’s what it does onstage.”
