Darren Hayes was concerned he would make a “really desperate” new album.

The former Savage Garden singer was initially worried switching his established sound for a more dance influenced direction may have been misinterpreted.

He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “There’s that danger of, you know, either making a really polite record or the danger of making a really desperate record that sounds like you are trying to keep up and be down with the kids.

“Of most importance really is that I had to really want to tell the stories on the album.”

The 39-year-old ‘Talk Talk Talk’ singer also said while it has its upbeat moments, his forthcoming fourth album was inspired by the sadness of relationship break-ups around him, despite being in a happy union with partner Richard Cullen himself.

He said: “A lot of the theme of the record is really finding my purpose. Many of the songs on the record talk about betrayal, a betrayal of friendship, that line between friendship and love. They are universal themes.

“As a couple, we felt like we were in the middle of this time when our friends were in relationships and they were all breaking down, and we have to kind of fight through it, that’s kind of the theme of the record.”

‘Talk Talk Talk’ is released on June 24th.
