Movies Worth Watching if You Love Fashion (and its Designers)

From Coco Chanel to Valentino, it's well-known that designers lead interesting lives; here are six films that'll give you a glimpse into their creative-minds.

1. Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards (2017)

Manolo Blahnik, one of the most influential shoe designers of our time, is the star of this documentary. The film, released in 2017, highlights the passion and the design process behind the esteemed designer. So for all you Sex and the City fanatics who have ever obsessed over a pair of Carrie Bradshaw’s blue Hangisi, this film is for you.

2. Coco Avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel) (2009)

The film title says it all. The French biopic, starring French actress Audrey Tautou, showcases the life of Chanel before her fame and fortune. The film also delves into Chanel’s love life, which, for a societal era of prim and proper, featured a lot of hushed affairs and lovemaking. If you’re interested in the humble, yet saucy, beginnings of the global empire that is Chanel, this movie is a must watch!

3. Valentino: The Last Emperor (2008)

The 2008 documentary recalls the life of legendary Italian designer Valentino Garavani. The biopic highlights Valentino’s impact on the global fashion industry, and follows the designer during the months before his retirement. If you ever wondered how an haute-couture fashion designer lives, you are surely in for a treat with this film.

4. Dior and I (2014)

Released in 2014, this documentary showcases the first couture collection designed by former Dior creative director Raf Simons. The documentary provides audiences a behind the scenes look into the hard work and dedication put in by the creative team at the Christian Dior fashion house.

5. Yves Saint Laurent (2014)

The 2014 French film depicts the life of Yves Saint Laurent during the 50’s when he was named the head designer at Dior. The film chronicles his ups and downs as a designer, and delves in-depth into his relationship with Pierre Bergé, his former lover and business partner. Bergé, who is very protective of Saint Laurent's creations, authorized the movie himself because he wanted to “maintain the image of Yves Saint Laurent.”

6. Saint Laurent (2014)

Also released in 2014, this French biopic is about the famous Yves Saint Laurent during his career. However, unlike Yves Saint Laurent (2014), Pierre Bergé did not endorse or support the production of this movie. Many critics pointed out the lack of influence from Bergé gave the movie more leeway to portray the dark side of Saint Laurent’s life; making the film an entertaining must watch!
