3 celebrity makeup artists share their red-carpet beauty tricks

Red carpet tip: Lash it up

When makeup artist Marni Burton is applying false lashes on her celeb clients like Taryn Manning, she likes to add individual lashes on top of the strip of falsies for extra drama. Eyeliner is also key. Burton prefers to layer. “First, I’ll do something faded and then go back with more, so I don’t just use one black [liner] You do your own line, and then the [false lashes] glue creates a second line, and then you do touch-ups.”

3 celebrity makeup artists share their red-carpet beauty tricks

Red carpet tip: Bigger is better when it comes to mirrors

If you’re applying lashes yourself, Burton says the size of the mirror you’re looking in matters. “It’s all about the angle. You can’t go into a little mirror and think you’re gonna do it [right]. Sit in front of a huge mirror. Full sized. Sit on the floor. I know it doesn’t sound exciting, but that’s key. You can’t be looking straight, you have to be looking down.” Try KISS Looks So Natural Lashes ($4.97), at drugstores and mass-market retailers.

3 celebrity makeup artists share their red-carpet beauty tricks

Red carpet tip: Take your time

Makeup artist Victoria Radford, who has worked with celebs like Fergie, says makeup needs to be applied when you’re not in a rush. “Makeup shouldn’t be slapped on, especially for something like a red carpet because you don’t have a mirror to check yourself and there are cameras,” she says.

Red carpet tip: Set your makeup

“For red carpet, it’s all about setting your makeup properly,” says Radford. Try Make Up For Ever’s HD Microfinish Powder ($39), at sephora.ca.

3 celebrity makeup artists share their red-carpet beauty tricks

Red carpet tip: Layers are key

“The way that I do all makeup is layering, layering, layering," says Radford. "You do very slight layers in order to have a finished effect that looks like you don’t have any makeup on – and it’s not going to move! The way to do that with lipstick is to start with a beautiful lip stain in a complementary colour. Let’s say you’re doing the most vibrant red: I would do a lip stain that’s maybe a deep orange, or a poppy or a blue cherry. This sets the tone for what the lipstick will look like. I created waterproof gel lip liners so it gives the lipstick something to hold onto. Take the liner, and fill the whole lip in with a light hand. By the time you actually do the lipstick, you’re not putting very much on. But it’s enough to really finish the look. And with those three layers, your lips aren’t going anywhere.” Radford Waterproof Gel Lip Liner ($29), at victoriaradford.com.

3 celebrity makeup artists share their red-carpet beauty tricks

Red carpet tip: Add shine strategically

Makeup artist Fiona Stiles has worked with everyone from Zoe Saldana and Zac Efron to Jessica Alba, Ellen Pompeo and David Bowie. “I do so many red carpet looks and I have to deal with a variety of different skin types – some clients are super dry, some I cannot put anything shimmery on because by the time they get to the red carpet the flash ruins it,” she says. “Generally [when I'm using highlighter], I keep the rest of the face quite matte if someone has oily skin, and focus only on the center of the face. For me, the bridge of the nose is the most modern, beautiful way of reflecting light on the face. You could also put highlighter right above the lashes on your eyelid so it catches a bit of light. I do this after eyeshadow and before loose powder.” To help keep oily skin matte, apply primer before foundation. Try Joe Fresh Primer ($12), at joefresh.com.
