Whether you knew him as Snape from Harry Potter or Hans Gruber in Die Hard (or anything else from his storied stage and screen career) today’s a sad day.

British actor Alan Rickman—and his signature sardonic drawl—lost his fight with cancer on Thursday, family and friends by his side. 

Daniel Radcliffe, who starred opposite Rickman on Harry Potter, released a touching tribute, saying:

“As an actor he was one of the first of the adults on Potter to treat me like a peer rather than a child. Working with him at such a formative age was incredibly important and I will carry the lessons he taught me for the rest of my life and career.”

Our thoughts are with his family.
