Here at the ELLE Canada HQ, it takes alot to surprise us in the realm of all things sweet...but when "unicorn poop" arrived in a Tiffany-blue box this morning, that was certainly an office first. This surprise to our jaded palates was courtesy of the team at Toronto bakery Desmond and Beatrice, who have taken the humble cookie and elevated it to high, pretzel, brownie and Turtle chunk-laden art. (And if you're wondering, "unicorn poop" bears a strong resemblance to a melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookie with rainbow sprinkles). Read on to learn more about the genius (aka magicmaker-in-chief Amanda Mizen) behind the delectable dozen we devoured this morning... What is Desmond and Beatrice's best-selling treat? We have a few!!! Our red velvet cupcake, our brownie stuffed chocolate chip cookie, and we make a mean breakfast cookie that flies in coffee shops all over the city. What is your first baking memory? I have been baking since I have been in diapers so I think my memories begin at home baking on the weekends. Have you ever had a truly epic "baking fail"? Yes! Truthfully they still happen every now and then. We are wholesalers and so our batch sizes are in the hundreds. If anything gets missed in the recipe the fail is EPIC!!! What sweet treat says "spring" to you? We have a mini egg cookie that is the best thing that will ever happen to you. Tell us a bit about what makes Desmond and Beatrice special... I started Desmond & Beatrice while I was on maternity leave with my first baby. I started a little website and then selling to others and it took off from there! In spite of our growth, we have stayed true to our home style baking and making and we still use all natural, real ingredients. Mama's Sunday baking at its best!
