We came, we watched, we applauded—and sometimes we judged harshly when the situation called for it during
last night’s Golden Globes. Here, our editors dish on the best and worst fashion choices, as well as the most memorable moments, from the show.

Noreen Flanagan, editor-in-chief Slow clap: It’s a tie between Emma Watson and Lupita Nyong’o. Emma’s scarlet backless Dior dress, with black leggings underneath, was modern, elegant—and chic. The purple pumps were an unexpected and stylish footnote (no pun intended). Lupita looked like a fashion heroine in her Ralph Lauren caped gown. The Yale graduate said she only wears clothes that speak to her. This dress must have whispered sweet nothings in her ear. Gorgeous. Honourable mention: Margot Robbie’s bejewelled and sexy Gucci stunner. No. Just no: Poor Lena Dunham landed on a number of worst dressed lists last year. I suspect she’ll be awarded the same dubious honour this year. I commend her for embracing her curves in all their fishtail glory, but the canary yellow made her skin look pasty and pallid. Honourable mention: Sandra Bullock’s tricoloured silk flamenco-inspired gown from Prabal Gurung and Drew Barrymore’s “pregnancy brain"-induced red-and-pink fluttery meltdown. Most surprised by: Jennifer Lawrence’s choice caught me by surprise. With all the attention on her—not to mention her hair—I thought the Dior haute couture gown didn’t build on that momentum. Huffington Post said it reminded them of Ariel’s mermaid dress, and The Mirror described it as a wedding cake covered in duct tape. For me, it wasn’t the silhouette or the design that was off; it was just that it didn’t reflect her delightfully quirky, witty and engaging personality. The dress wore her. Biggest letdown: Zoe Saldana is usually a fashion plate. Her Golden Globes gown, however, was more of a smorgasbord of mismatched prints and embellishments. She said during a red-carpet interview that she was so flattered when Prabal Gurung said he had designed it just for her. “I had no choice but to wear it,” she said. But, dear Zoe, you did have a choice. As Adlai Stevenson once said: “Flattery is all right, so long as you don’t inhale.” You inhaled, my friend. The other letdown last night? Johnny Depp’s dye job. What a golden—and greasy—letdown! Best acceptance speech: First off, Cate Blanchett wins for simply not pretending that she hadn’t prepared anything because she was just so darned surprised that she had won. Brava, as well, for the stunning tulle-and-lace backless Armani gown. Best date: Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. They’ve been married for two and a half decades—which is the equivalent of a gazillion years in Hollywood—and yet they seem to still genuinely enjoy being in each other’s company.zoe-goldenglobes

It didn’t have to be this way, Zoe Saldana.
