TIFF JOURNAL: PRE-FESTIVAL

On the party scene: At Birks and 99 Sudbury.

This festival, Laura deCarufel and Jennifer Lee, the co-editors of Hardly magazine, have the high honour of reporting live from TIFF'S coolest events. Stay tuned for party coverage and behind-the-scenes scoop! TIFF officially kicks off today, but the style set tend to be early adopters. Case in point? This week's string of fetes, which started with  FashionTelevision's 25th-anniversary party on Tuesday (Unofficial subtitle: An Ode to Jeanne). Last night, it was Birks's turn to up the city's glam factor. At the Bloor Street flagship, a fashionable crowd—clients, fashion editors and local bold-faced names—gathered to celebrate Score: A Hockey Musical, the festival's opening night film. Servers circulated with foie gras delicacies and flutes of Prosecco, as the crowd admired the sparkle on display. With her impeccable crimson pout and black asymmetrical dress, Score's Allie MacDonald was one of the party's brightest lights. Allie also looks set to become a star—her next film is The House at the end of the Street, with Elisabeth Shue and fellow up-and-comer Jennifer Lawrence. (If Allie looks familiar already, it might be from the Ford Fusion commercial. Which sounds crazy. But even in a car commercial, as one of several concerned folks talking fuel efficiency, her charisma stands out. Trust.) Who else was there? Score director Michael McGowan. Noreen Flanagan, editor-in-chief of ELLE Canada, with ELLE's senior editor, Christina Reynolds. The National Post's Shinan Govani. Stephen Wong and Kirk Pickersgill, the designers of Greta Constantine. Lisa Tant from Flare; Bernadette Morra from FASHION. And, threatening to eclipse the star power in the room, a sensational pink diamond, the first ever mined from Ontario's Victor Mines. By evening's close, nine loose stones (all from the Canadian diamond collection) had been sold to private buyers. Another stunner from the Birks party."] [/caption] Next stop: Another TIFF pre-party at 99 Sudbury in Toronto's west end. The vibe? King Street meets Queen Street. In the new event space, circus performers undulated from hoops on the ceiling above a crowd of stylish guests, including Andrew Sardone of NOW, designer Philip Sparks and stylist Sansyrae St. Martin. Simple. Beautiful.
