ELLE France's special cover this week.
In the wake of last week's horrific events in Paris, our sister publication, ELLE France, took the unprecedented step of publishing an illustration on their cover, instead of the usual celebrity. It's something they've never done before - but then again, what happened last week in their country is something no one has seen before there either.
It was part of a larger special edition they've released in response to a series of violent terrorist attacks that rocked their country (and the world), including the murders of journalists at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. French ELLE usually publishes once a week on a Friday, but moved their publication up to Wednesday for this. They explained their special cover this way: "For this issue, ELLE decided not to run a photograph on the cover of the magazine. Instead, ELLE decided to run an illustration by Soledad, our emblematic illustrator, who gave us the honor of running some illustrations that we are publishing this week, one of which is this dove, who holds not just a pencil in it’s beak, but so much hope. Hope for our families, for our children. For tomorrow." Next week, their cover star is Keira Knightley, with a big smile on her face. They chose the joyful image as a follow-up to this illustration because it represents a new, more hopeful energy for France.
