Paris Fashion Week Fall 2013: The Lanvin showroom in photos (or: OMG)

Amazing Fall 2013 Lanvin pieces in the Paris showroom.

At first, I couldn’t find the Lanvin showroom, which is tucked away on a side street in a residential area of Paris. Then around a corner, I spied a tall gentleman wearing leather pants and smoking with the kind of conviction that indicated he was born toting a pack of Marlboros and a leopard print lighter. I followed him down the street and found the showroom—the site of one of my personal highlights from Paris Fashion Week. (All the astonishing looks from the Fall 2013 collection all in one place!)

These are pics of my favourite pieces, beginning with the lovely ladylike dress above, which was worn by It model Cara Delevingne on the runway earlier in the week.

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013: Adrian Wu and Ashtiani

by

IMG 6638new Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013: Adrian Wu and AshtianiText by: Masha Gladchenko

I was thrilled to be at World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week for Adrian Wu’s unique collection, inspired by the threat of a nuclear war in the 1950s. Wu’s vision was immensely dystopian and reminiscent of the dark days when nuclear weapons had spread fear throughout. Wu presented a collection of sculptural pieces that explain the aftermath of biological weapons. He balanced deformity with elegance (as seen in the slicked back 50s updos and wonderful librarian frames). It was a ‘neat disaster’ as models gracefully strolled to romantic tunes by Ella Fitzgerald and Glen Miller. My personal favourite included ‘I’m a Fool to Want You’ by Billie Holiday.

This refreshing, cooling and comforting eye gel is the only thing that got me through Fashion Week.

(Okay, there may have been a hip flash containing very strong coffee vodka too.)

NYFW Diary: Backstage Beauty Report – Cushnie & Ochs and Rag & Bone (plus, couture catering!)

SS2013 NYC BANNER NYFW Diary: Backstage Beauty Report Cushnie & Ochs and Rag & Bone (plus, couture catering!)

antonio 764x1024 NYFW Diary: Backstage Beauty Report Cushnie & Ochs and Rag & Bone (plus, couture catering!)

This is Antonio Corral Calero, Artistic Director for MoroccanOil, backstage at Cushnie & Ochs. Sadly, his amazingly shiny patent leather shoes aren’t in the shot. But, as great as his shoes were, that’s not the interesting bit.

The hair Calero created for slinky, stylish show was super straight and shiny, with a center part — very wearable and very flattering. When I asked him what the inspiration was for the strong graphic look, he said, “Imelda Marcos.”

Yes, he’s talking about this lady.

“The designers got inspired by Imelda Marcos. So, they wanted something that looked opulent, rich and confident,” he explained, “and Michelle [Ochs] was very much that way. The Cushnie et Ochs collection for Spring/Summer 2012 is about having confidence, looking your best, great lines. It’s healthy looking hair with a little edge. It’s sexy and simple at the same time.”

Key product: Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray.

Hair at Rag & Bone

Backstage at Rag & Bone, the mood was a little frantic. For a start, the temperature was at least 400 degrees. The floor was packed with models, PR reps, press, photographers and security people, and the numerous floor fans did little to dissipate the humid, liquid-air conditions. Both Guido Palau (Redken’s master of all that is hair) and Gucci Westman (Revlon’s gorgeous and down-to-earth key artist) were cracking the whip to get the models in a show-ready state.

Here’s what Guido had to say about the look for the hair, which was raked back with a wet, helmet-like front and left in soft waves at the back. “It’s sporty with a little 90s feeling,” he explained. “It’s this idea of easy sophistication but in a minimal way, using wet and dry. This is all about big drama, big forehead, there’s the toughness of it going back, but it’s not completely hard. Very dramatic, but soft at the same time, and very impactful.”

Key product: Redken Hardware 16 Super Strong Gel.

Food backstage at Rag & Bone

And finally, my fashion week challenge is: I pledge to eat food from every single catering station backstage this week.

This may not sound like much of a task, but trust me, the risks of missing your interview slot because you’re shoveling a spinach wrap down your gob are high; plus, eating is very un-fashion.

Still, someone’s got to do the in-depth reportage, and here I am.

Every backstage area has food stations – some consist of a few paltry, lifeless sandwiches, and others are happy-making, life affirming set ups. Today’s winner? Rag & Bone. Look at that spread. Admittedly, it had been picked over by the time I got to it, but imagine more sandwiches and nibbly bits. The dessert station wasn’t too shabby either. There were Madelines!

Toronto Fashion Week: At Lucian Matis and Holt Renfrew

FW Highlight Reel Toronto Fashion Week: At Lucian Matis and Holt Renfrew

Beauty look at Lucian Matis. Image by Michele Li

1. Black out beauty
The smoky eye is getting extra vampy —think a deeply saturated, one-tone colour over the entire lid (barely any graduation in colour), courtesy of the Smashbox creation at Lucian Matis. Smashbox makeup artist Lori Taylor layered on black cream liner as a base, then swept an intense black shadow on top, blending the line and edges slightly with a Q-tip. The result? A deep black, smoky eye set against porcelain skin and nude lips. “We wanted to do something a bit more sensual and mysterious because the collection is so dark. Mystery is the key word for the hair and makeup,” Matis told ELLE. As the models strutted down the runway, the focus was on the linear cuts and striking eyes. Mysterious, indeed.

2. Drama, drama, drama
Lucian Matis showed off a theatrical collection in the grand ballroom of the Royal York Hotel. We loved the crocheted dresses, elaborate feathered garments (including a wow-inducing ballgown) and pant suits with leather lapels—but our hearts went out to the poor models who wore nipple tape under their revealing frocks. Ouch!

3. Dance off
At the annual Holt Renfrew designer mash-up presentation, the lights dimmed over the rows of fashion goers who lined the catwalk as a spot light shone over a charming man at the head of the runway. The crowd fell silent in anticipation of what he had in store for them. To everyone’s amazement he broke out into a full on tap dance, spinning and dropping into the splits. A definite crowd pleaser!

4. The cat’s meow
One trend that’s finally trickled onto the runways of Toronto? Cat fashion! Lucian Matis showed Louis Vuitton-esque kitty ear headbands at his Fall/Winter 2012 show while Smythe put black panther hats on the runway during the Holt Renfrew show.

Backstage beauty at Mackage Fall/Winter 2012

FW Beauty Backstage Backstage beauty at Mackage Fall/Winter 2012

Mackage face chart 300x2801 Backstage beauty at Mackage Fall/Winter 2012

“Excuse me ladies, Rico is ready for his makeup,” says a severe-looking woman as she nervously consults a clipboard and frantically gestures behind her. Why is it she’s on edge? Enter Montreal-native Rico a.k.a the Zombie Boy (you may recognize him from Lady Gaga’s video, “Born This Way”). Rico strides into the room—rocking a spiked leather vest and baggy pants complete with an authentic gas mask hanging from his belt loop—that’s almost as stare-worthy as his body art. Covered in head-to-toe tattoos, Rico won the Guinness World Records for having the most bones and insects tattooed on a human body.

In short, senior M.A.C makeup artist Melissa Gibson has good reason to cock an eyebrow at his “ready for makeup” face. Ever the professional, she strikes up a conversation as she reaches for a bottle of face moisturizer.

You may think having a tattoo-covered man in a fashion show may be a bit distracting but as designers Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy explain, Rico was the perfect model to capture their mood for Fall/Winter 2012. “We saw Water for Elephants and it so haunting but beautiful,” says Elfassy backstage at the runway show. ” We wanted to capture that feeling of dark but playful and sophisticated.” Looking around at the theatrical stage (decorated with hanging parasols, vintage popcorn machines and tinkling carnival lights) I can see the melancholy circus connection, and then of course there is Rico. “How perfect is he for the show?” asks Elfassy. “When we found out he was Canadian, we knew we needed to have him. Canadians need to stick together!”

How then do you translate OTT circus appeal into a makeup look?
