Natasha Poly beauty 681x1024 Cannes red carpet report: Our favourite fashion & beauty looks

Now that’s how you vamp it up on the red carpet. Model Natasha Poly, Cannes 2012. Photo courtesy of WireImage.

Top beauty look: Natasha Poly took the smoky eye and brought it to the next level—and then to the after-party, the hotel lobby and the level after that. We especially love how she paired it with a flawless face, nude lip and those AMAZING mismatched earrings. (Learn how to create the sultry, smoky eye at home.)

You HAVE to see the rest of Natasha’s dress.

Ines de la Fressange Cannes2012 Cannes insider report: Todays top fashion and beauty looks

Who can resist the glamour of the Cannes film festival? The rattle and hum of the Croisette, the snap of flashbulbs on the red carpet, the gleam of turquoise waters just beyond festival HQ. It’s both raucous and romantic—a cocktail of decadence, Tender is the Night for the iPad generation. In short? Expect hot sun and even hotter people. During the festival, which runs until May 27, we’ll bring you insider scoop directly from the festival, with behind-the-scenes snaps and our daily picks for the best red carpet looks.

Fashion look of the day: The inimitable Inès de la Fressange, author, model, muse to masters including Karl Lagerfeld. Her one-shoulder white gown is as elegant as she is, while the belt of laurel leaves suggests her playful good humour. Note the silver Roger Vivier flats—de la Fressange is an ambassador for the exalted French brand.

Lauren street style Street style at |FAT|: More top looks from Arts & Fashion Week, part 2

All photos by Brendan Adam Zwelling.

One of the most wonderful things about |FAT| Arts & Fashion Week is how it inspires people to showcase their personal style to the max. Check out some of our favourite looks from last night at the shows.

WHO: Lauren Pettigrew

OCCUPATION: Pastry chef

SITE: laurenpettigrew.wordpress.com

STYLE ICON: Early-days Elton John. I love the big blazers and the tight pants. I feel like it’s a very fearless style – androgynous, but still gendered at the same time, which is totally what I like to go for.

MOST EXCITED TO SEE AT |FAT|: It’s gotta be Von Bardonitz, the whole line. It’s all super black and edgy. I’m walking for it this year, which is really exciting. It’s like playing dress-up in the best way possible—you’d want to go out of your house.

Style Snapshot: Lino Catalano, of MEXX Canada

by

Mexx colour block dress Style Snapshot: Lino Catalano, of MEXX Canada

MEXX colour block dress, $110.

ELLE Canada’s Christina Fanioudakis chats with Lino Catalano, the brand-new director of concept and design with MEXX Canada, about trends, style icons, and what he’s excited about this spring.

What are your favourite Spring/Summer 2012 trends?

I’m loving the mixes of bold colours and prints, as well as layering of soft translucent fabrics. Very fresh!

Any trends that you’re happy to see go?

The body-con ultra mini mini-skirt with sky-high heels. Unless you’re on the beach wearing flip flops with a mini, only then is it okay!

Your top style icons?

I love the sophisticated edge of Anja Rubik, and I drool over the cool street styles of models like Abbey Lee.

Tell us about this spring’s MEXX collection.

My involvement with the collection will start trickling in this fall and will be in full swing for Spring 2013. For this spring, it’s very much about fresh colours and layering! What’s important to our girl is that the clothes empower, not overpower, her. She loves the trends but she doesn’t want them to scream. There is a sophisticated elegance that is part of our European heritage and a touch of the North American sensibility which is part of our roots as well. I’d like to bring in a twist and an edge to the mix that will make it current and timeless.

What are you most looking forward to this spring, for yourself and for MEXX?

Personally: warmer weather! For Mexx, a bright future full of sparkle and music. We’re a global brand with a talented team always ready to take it to the next level. Our Mexx girl only asks for one thing: that we bring her there with us!

The Hunger Games meets Spring 2012 fashion (Or: What would Katniss wear?)

Katniss dress The Hunger Games meets Spring 2012 fashion (Or: What would Katniss wear?)

The Hunger Games is smashing box office records faster than Katniss Everdeen can draw her bow. But what of the fashion? Yesterday, Kathryn Hudson, ELLE Canada’s features editor, wrote about the off-screen and on-screen style highlights, and today, our Kristan Chan is playing stylist, selecting our favourite Spring/Summer 2012 runway looks for six of the most compelling characters.

Cinna, we got this.

1. KATNISS (Jennifer Lawrence)

Character: Tough, brave, amazing. Katniss is a fierce competitor and even fiercer protector of the people she loves.

Style: Bold.

The ShOws: At Ruffian and David Szeto

Noblesse oblige

Ruffian’s Brian Wolk and Claude Morais presented an elegant, ladylike collection to a well-heeled crowd at The ShOws at Toronto’s Ritz-Carlton yesterday. The sharply tailored separates, wool plaids and colourful tweeds evoked images of the English countryside, with garments that we’re sure the Crawley sisters from Downton Abbey would have loved. Even though some speculated that Ruffian’s jewel-toned hues and chapeaux were a little too similar to Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2011 show, we think Wolk and Morais are a much welcome addition to the Toronto fashion week schedule.

State of grace

Born in Vancouver, David Szeto launched his eponymous fashion line in Paris in 1993 and soon made a name for himself as a connoisseur of ladylike dressing. That expertise was on full display at his presentation at The ShOws. Szeto showcased a chic Fall/Winter 2012 collection, mixing bold hues (cobalt, forest green) and hemlines (from above the knee to mid-calf). The throughline? Refinement. As Szeto told ELLE backstage, “I always design with my customer in mind.”
