9 fashion secrets of Kate and Pippa Middleton

by

Time and again, Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and younger sister Pippa prove that, when it comes to fashion, the siblings from Bucklebury rule.

Here, we dissect their signature style elements – from their wardrobe staples to their hair and skincare routines -  to reveal the secrets to their signature stylish looks.

They stick with signature colours

Perhaps suited to her outgoing personality, Pippa is often spotted in scarlet-toned styles – from a deep V-neck Temperley garnet gown with matching lipstick to a ruby ’60s-inspired Zara topper. And for the Duchess of Cambridge, blue is her go-to hue. Whether it was a Sapphire jersey Issa wrap for her engagement announcement, a navy lace Erdem shift for the Canadian tour or a pale blue-grey Jenny Packham gown to host a royal dinner, it’s clear that Middleton turns to the colour on important occasions.

They follow their classic tastes

While more fearless fashion types opt for tent dresses and paper-bag pants, Pippa and the princess stick to that which is tried and true: silhouettes that stay close to their torsos and necklines that show off their décolletage. Classic shapes will always remain the most flattering for these siblings.

They have go-to accessories

Kate and Pippa clearly have their pick of fabulous accessories – from the latest it-bag to fresh-off-the-catwalk footwear – but the sisters are more often seen sporting a few faithful favourites. Pippa has been spotted with pricey purses by Bulgari, Loewe and Prada, but it’s an accessibly priced top-handle by tote Modalu that is her favoured arm charm – she has the same exact bag in no fewer than five colours. The Duchess, meanwhile, regularly steps out in affordable heels and wedges by LK Bennett, a line that was recommended to her by Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall for their comfort factor.

They are hat fanatics

The stylish sisters have been spotted in all manners of hats – from fanciful wedding fascinators to berets and jaunty fedoras. Couture milliner Phillip Treacy, who counts Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker among his top clients, designed many of them.  Kate and Pippa have also been known to cap off their looks with headpieces by Gina Foster and Vivien Sheriff.

They do double takes

Even royals repeat outfits! The Duchess of Cambridge makes it a point of regularly shopping her closet, and is often photographed publicly in the same looks she has worn months or even years before, such as the white Reiss dress she opted for her engagement portrait and then spotted in again on Canada Day in Ottawa.  Similarly, Pippa has mastered the art of all-season dressing, often wearing one dress in the summer, and then adding a blazer and black hose when the temperature drops.

They get help for their glowing skin

There is no question that both sisters have enviable skin – Catherine’s face is always clear and luminous while Pippa maintains a fresh-from-the-beach bronzed glow. That said, they do get some help. Pippa’s year-round tan, dubbed “Royal Mocha,” comes courtesy of a mobile spray-tan service. As for the Duchess, Camilla introduced Kate to beauty therapist Deborah Mitchell, who specializes in a $200-per-session bee sting facial – hailed as the “non-surgical” facelift and a natural alternative to Botox.

They see beauty in imperfection

No doubt, one of the Duchess of Cambridge’s best assets is her perfect smile. But those pearly whites weren’t always there – she was, after all, a former smoker – and now the secret to her stunning smile is out. Kate reportedly turned to pioneering French dentist Didier Fillion, who specializes in creating an imperfect and deliberately unaligned mouth to create a natural, non-artificial smile. Newly-single Pippa, meanwhile, has taken cues from her sister by sporting  side-parted natural waves. Clearly these two know the power of a good blowout.

They love a bargain

Yes, you read correctly: The future Queen and the society swan shop at mass stores! Even though she’s moved into a palace, Kate still regularly picks up pieces from the nearby Topshop, and not a week goes by without seeing Pippa in some soon-to-be bestseller look by Zara, French Connection or H&M.

They love their boots

Knee-high equestrian-style over jeans or zip-up booties with bare legs, you’re more like to catch the Middletons in leather boots than sky-high stilettos.

If you had to copy one look from Kate and Pippa, which one above would it be?

8 fashion tips on adding sparkle to your holiday ensemble

by

Nothing amps up your outfit like a sparkly accessory—and no occasion calls for that extra wow factor like the holidays. Whether it’s an eye-catching jewel, glittering bag or high-shine heel, pump up the volume on your party gear with these opulent extras.

NinaRicci 679x1024 8 fashion tips on adding sparkle to your holiday ensemble

Nina Ricci, Fall 2011-12

1. Sparkly headpiece

The simple sparkly hairpin seems a thing of the past compared to all the high-wattage head-candy we’ve been seeing the past few seasons. It all began with the brilliant baubled headbands spotted at Nina Ricci’s fall runway – brilliant clusters of colossal gemstones worthy of Blair Waldorf – while Sonia Rykiel dressed up chignons with jeweled barrettes. And lo and behold both Louis Vuitton and Chanel’s spring collections featured luminous hair accessories that lent an ethereal princess vibe – perfect inspiration for party season.  If a glittering hair accessory feels a bit too pageant for you, why not take your cues from Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge and try on a crystal-trimmed fascinator or jaunty sequin felt fedora. Queen for a day…or a party season, at least.

2. Sparkly shoes

There is no better way to put a sparkle in your step this holiday season than with a glittery shoe. Whether it’s a sequin-speckled bootie à la Miu Miu or a glossy patent leather Tribute pump by YSL or a mannish lamé-covered loafer from Christian Louboutin or Jimmy Choo, these shoes will add instant wow factor to any shoe wardrobe.

3. Sparkly collar

A quirky detachable collar is the coolest way to update your winter wardrobe right now and a paillette-finished style in particular can add polish to an outfit without the bulk of a whole shirt. Take inspiration from your favourite bloggers and front row regulars and wear yours with a simple blouse or cashmere sweater to let it really pop.

We have two words for you: Arm Party. Whether it’s an oversize cuff, diamante friendship wrap, jangly friendship bracelet, metal bangle or gleaming rose gold watch, this is the time to load ’em up and pile them on. And don’t forget the knuckleduster cocktail rings – one on each Chanel Peridot-polished digit will do.

5. Sparkly necklace and earrings

While you’re at, why not lend your holiday looks an extra dose of drama with striking drop earrings or a statement bib necklace. While the latter bijou is still going strong (see ubiquitous choker styles), glam chandeliers have made a big comeback. Whether your lobes are pierces or not, a crystal shoulder-scraper is an equally stunning adornment.

Alexander Wang Adriel metallic clutch

6. Sparkly clutch

Miniature minaudières and itty-bitty box bags get festive this season with rhinestones, glitter and a heavy dose of sheen. Though they may be small in stature – just big enough for you keys, lipstick and a credit card – these jazzed-up minis pack quite a style punch. Maximalists will adore Dolce & Gabbana’s baroque pearl-and-gemstone studded style, while more minimally inclined mademoiselles should carry Alexander Wang’s sleek silver metallic clutch.

7. Sparkly belt

From Versace’s enameled metal cincher to Alexander McQueen’s dazzling chain link to J.Crew’s skinny styles, a belt with a metallic or patent finish will upgrade any look in a flash. The best part? It will put the focus on the smallest part of your figure.

8. Sparkly sunglasses

Brighten your cold weather outlook with sparkly cat-eye sunnies. Our favourites come courtesy of Miu Miu’s “Noir” collection featuring oversized, angular frames with metallic glitter-acetate. Both Hailee Steinfeld and Madonna have been recently snapped in a pair. Worn with a festive LBD, they will imbue your holiday party look with a dose of Old Hollywood glamour.
