Jo Malone’s Charlotte Stockwell

I can’t recall a time when someone didn’t express overt enthusiasm for a Jo Malone candle. Even Kate Middleton loves them—she famously lit several Jo Malone candles and had them sprinkled throughout the venue on her big day. Apparently she used Orange Blossom, Grapefruit, and Lime, Basil and Mandarin.

Nonetheless, ELLE Canada was given exclusive access to Charlotte Stockdale, style editor of Jo Malone London. Here’s what she had to say about the strangely wonderful Tomato Leaf candle, which is part of the brand’s Just Like Sunday collection, which is on counters now.

Q: What is your first scent memory?

A: Getting off the plane in Greece.  It would smell like oregano, sage and hot herbs and foliage.

Q: Which scent makes you feel safe and comforted?

A: I love rose, geranium and the clean and calming scent of lavender.  The scent of green vine evokes childhood memories of time spent with my mother in the garden and incense reminds me of going to church with my family every Sunday through my childhood years. I still do when I go back home to the country.

Q: What scent did your mother wear?

My mother wore a lot of scents, she was a scent hoarder!   From what I can remember, she wore Chanel no 5, Poison by Dior, Joy by Jean Patou.  She went through a period of trying everything under the sun. She bought a scent every single time she either went shopping in London or was traveling, so there’s a massive collection at home of every single brand you can possibly imagine with bottles dating back to the 60’s and 70’s. I used to love the bottles so I used to ask her if I could have them.  I never really liked the scents that much as I tend to like more natural scents.  The Shu Uemura, Shiseido and Kenzo bottles were beautiful.

Q: How to candles affect your own mental being?

A: They are soothing, they delight you and give you pleasure.  They connect to memories of things or places.  Candles at home are my switch off, they are very much a part of my relaxation system.  I light them in the morning or the evening.

Q: How did you come across the scent Tomato Leaf?

A: With my mother. When I was young she had a little glass green house where she grew tomatoes.  We used to go and pick them together. My favorite part was seeing if they were ripe yet and the smell from the green stem was so incredible when you picked them off the vine.  That scent has stayed with me all my life and it brings me feelings of happiness, vitality, growth and health.

Q: Are macaroons your favourite baked good?

A: Yes, absolutely they’re one of my favourite baked goods.  I’m quite partial to baked goods. I’m not that fussy.  Macaroons remind me of tea with my grandmother.  Sweet Almond & Macaroon really brings me to that table.  At 4:30pm sharp it was tea time with the pots of tea and the cakes, sandwiches and macaroons.

The other candles in the Just like Sunday collection include Lavendar & Lovage, Sweet Almond & Macaroon and Incense & Embers. Each 200g candle retails for $75 and are available at Holt Renfrew.

Lipstick is the greatest beauty product of all time, and yes, I’m that girl who wears it to the beach and hot yoga. What? Sometimes, I leave fuchsia marks on the fawn-coloured coats of my two wiggly pugs. Working in the beauty department, I’m a firm believer in sampling everything that goes into the magazine—whether it’s a wet hair, serum-loaded eye patches or chemical peels (and I’m not afraid to take the trends for a spin while I’m at my desk). Since I also cover the health beat, I’m loyal to crazy intense training like CrossFit, hot yoga and outdoor boot camps—I’m even willing to sample a diet trend or two—though I’m pretty faithful to Paleo (until I see a donut).
