The third floor industrial loft of The Century Room in downtown Toronto proved to be an apt stomping ground for Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong‘s spring 2012 runway show. With a backdrop of exposed brick walls and worn, wooden floorboards the Greta Constantine woman took centre stage in the designers’ requisite draped and ruched dresses in pops of pretty emerald, mandarin and rose hues.
This interlude, however romantic – and somewhat expected - turned on its head mere moments later. Heavy beats vibrated to epic decibels while models charged ahead (in platform Greta Constantine X Aldo heels) with looks that were heavy on the ‘tude and light on colour: Folded leather skirts, blindingly white cropped jackets with edged tails and louche black pants fit for an Obi-Wan Kenobi warrior.
Thankfully this girl-meets-street vibe was accented by feminine touches of fluttering chiffons and caped cotton tees, but perhaps most favourable was what the boys closed with: Flowing jersey gowns in matte grey; not at all surprising, but beautiful nonetheless.
