The September Issue

by

By Noreen Flanagan

SEPT 2010 COVER2 219x300 The September Issue Our September issue just landed in the office—so you’ll see it on newsstands in a few weeks. It’s our biggest September book since we launched in 2001. Daria is our gorgeous cover girl, and supermodel/supermom Heidi Klum is our celebrity interview. We chat with fashion wunderkind Jason Wu and the ever-chic fashion designer Roland Mouret. Have you noticed how the words ‘heritage,’ ‘archive’ and ‘history’ are cropping up everywhere? In our special trend report we take a look at why the stylesphere has gone all ‘old-school’ on us. Don’t miss our annual fall TV roundup: James Wolk is our new creative crush. Speaking of crushes, we explore why we fall for Hollywood heartthrobs—a phenomenon that predates you Mr. Beiber.  We didn’t chat with that hunky Old Spice Man, but we do tell you about the new fragrances your man could smell like from Clive Owen, to Matthew McConaughey and Antonio Banderas to name a few. So, sit back—set aside some “me time” and get in the mood for fall.

Brit street style

by

By Jennifer Weatherhead, Photography by Jennifer Weatherhead

I’ve been travelling around Northern England the past few days … spending time in Leeds, York, Newcastle and Manchester. One thing I love about the Brits is their incredible sense of style. Usually everyone focuses on London when it comes to edgy street style and shopping (from cheap thrills to designer duds), but I’ve found some fantastic shopping areas in other cities, and the street style? Even more amazing. More on where to shop in a later post … in the meantime, check out these style snaps from Newcastle.

Swiss miss

by

opi swiss collection Swiss missI have a slight obsession with nail polish … ok, maybe it’s more than a slight obsession. It might be a big obsession, as in I have a shelf in my linen/beauty closet at home dedicated just to nail polish, polish removers, nail files, buffers and such — all lined up like pretty little gems. At last count (a couple of weeks ago) I had 77 bottles of polish in a multitude of shades ranging from girlie pink, greys (love a grey nail), bright blues and hot corals (my summer go-to shades), minty greens, deep red, purple and navy, shimmery finishes, matte finishes, ultra-shiny … and I’m not counting my base and top coats. They’re in their own category, obviously. That was the final count after I dug out about 25 bottles to give away. Like I said … a slight obsession.

Fanatical Fashion: The Denis Gagnon zippered LBD

Detail driven

Bedo Fanatical Fashion: The Denis Gagnon zippered LBDWhen you think of the house of Chanel, what comes to mind? Strings of pearls, perhaps. That iconic camellia. What about Balmain? We credit them for bringing bold shoulders back, whilst Donna Karan’s entire empire could be attributed to her deft skills at dramatic draping.

You’re probably wondering where I’m going with this …

My point: Attention, they say, is always in the detail. And when it comes to fashion — with all of its illustrious manifestations — a designer hones his craft to come up with what us editors refer to as his “signature look”; one that is often imitated, but rarely outdone. The Amma Effect

Hundreds Flock to Richmond Hill for a Hug from their Hero

Amma Prayer 241x300 The Amma Effect

When Kelly Cutrone invited me to meet Mata Amritananandamayi (Amma), “The Mother of Immortal Bliss,” I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.

“I’m gonna meet Kelly Cutrone!” I announced to my father excitedly at family dinner last Sunday.

“Who?” he asked, bewildered.

“She’s a PR lady that’s repping Amma” I said.

“You mean Amma the Hugging Saint? You’re gonna meet Amma the Hugging Saint?” My father shouted.

That’s when I realized that Amma is kind of a big deal. Read the rest of this entry

Alexander Wang at Holt Renfrew

Alexander The Great

wang better3 300x293 Alexander Wang at Holt Renfrew

Working in the fashion business we are accustomed to canoodling with some of the industry’s biggest stars. We’ve had our stolen moments with Karl, champagne with Calvin and canapés with Roland. So, by virtue you would think last night’s soiree at Holt Renfrew celebrating Alexander Wang’s new fall collection (in which the designer was present) would be just another day at the office for us. Wrong.

Maybe it’s his signature studded handbags that make us melt or his indelible skills with knitwear. Whatever the case, being in close proximity to this burgeoning New York designer last evening was a moment; a really big one. Read the rest of this entry

Jon Bon Jovi: Still got it, and he knows it too!

Real Jersey boys Bon Jovi rocked a full house at Rogers Centre last night

Jon Bon Jovi: Still got it, and he knows it too!DSC015501 e1279729575627 225x300 Jon Bon Jovi: Still got it, and he knows it too!

Halfway through last night’s Bon Jovi concert, frontman pretty boy Jon Bon himself placed his hand over his heart and looked out into the audience- a generational montage of females with 80s-inspired hairstyles (real or not, I’ll never know) and with his trademark megawatt smile, said he was “taking it all in.” What exactly? The 48-year old rocker with big blue eyes and even bigger hair confessed that in the 26 years he’s rocked sold-out shows in the T. dot he’s always wanted to play the biggest venue in the city- the Rogers Centre. (“A long way from the El Mocambo,” he declares, the dive-y Spadina bar where the band played in their early days.)

Summer Style 101

ELLE Canada editors weigh in on summer’s worst style offenses

By: Alannah O’Neill

trumpster Summer Style 101

“I hate when people go overboard with fake tans. Splotchy, orange tans are just so wrong and tacky! It reminds me of Snooki– unless you’re trying out for Jersey Shore, stay away from it!”
-Jennifer Weatherhead, Web Editor

-“A face full of foundation. It’s summer-—relax! Leave the heavy makeup for fall.”
-Sarah Dolphin, Acting Beauty and Health Editor

“I hate the transparent plastic brassiere straps that girls wear with tank tops. Go for a strapless bra or tank with built in support. [Plastic bra straps] are the equivalent to transparent lucite high heels, soo tacky!”
