Howard Barr, hair stylist and Canada's creative consultant for John Frieda, dishes on the hottest runway-inspired hair trends for spring '07 with tips on how real gals can re-create the looks at home, sans catwalk.
The trend: '80 Retro
Rocked the runways at: DSqaured, Vivienne Westwood
Love it 'cuz: "It's refreshing and exciting to see a move towards bigger hair," Barr says.
Get it at home:
1)Apply a hair serum to towel-dried hair to protect against heat styling
2)Work in a volumizing mousse for body and fullness
3)Blow-dry hair
4)Use a jumbo curling iron to create a "bump" at the root area. Direct the front of the curling iron to the side you want to have a part on and upwards at the crown.
5)Flip head upside down and backcomb hair at nape and halfway up back of the head
6)Finish with firm-hold hairspray
Expert advice: Backcombing is crucial to getting the lift for this look. "Learn how to do it properly from your hairdresser or the internet, otherwise it can look like a rat's nest," says Barr.
Star products: For lift use John Frieda Sheer Blonde Blonde Ambition Volumizing Mousse or John Frieda Brilliant Brunette Full Shine Volumizing Mousse, $10/213g each, available at Shoppers Drug Mart, www.johnfrieda.com, 1-800-521-3189. For long-lasting hold try Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-hold hairspray $10/350 ml.
