The classic beauty shade makes a comeback.
When did we forget our love of red lipstick? In 1953, Christian Dior wanted to make an impression on guests at his haute-couture show, so he designed scarlet-hued dresses and a collection of vibrant lipsticks to match. Iconic, show-stopping reds – from glossy black to rich burgundy – have never really disappeared from the runways, but in real life, the “your-lips-but-better” shades of nude and dusty pink became most women’s go-to colours. Online beauty enthusiasts were a little more experimental, posting Instas of their Easter-egg-blue or metallic-grey pouts. The classic red lip has re-emerged from between these beauty polar opposites, and it feels surprising and new. Here’s to its triumphant return.
