Serious bragging rights: The Emirates Palace Spa, Abu Dhabi

If sheet face masks had been around in the time of Louis XVI, we’re betting he and his wife Marie Antoinette would have booked into this opulent spa for the 24 Carat Gold Radiance Facial. A sheet of gold – real, actual gold! – is massaged into skin using nanotechnology, which reportedly breaks down the gold and releases its anti-inflammatory properties.   READ MORE: Why winter is the perfect time to up your skincare game

To imbibe without guilt: The Caudalie Vinotherapie Spa at the Plaza Hotel, New York

When visiting The Plaza in New York, bypass the tea room (sorry, Eloise) and head up to the Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa on the fourth floor. Here, we tried the all-natural French brand’s Vinoperfect Radiance facial, which uses the ultra-relaxing (there may even have been some drooling) technique “palpé roulé,” a gentle massaging and rolling of the skin that helps prevent sagging. Expert advice: Post-treatment, treat yourself to a glass of red straight from the brand’s mother ship and vineyards in Bordeaux. Yep, they have wine IN the spa. #win   READ MORE: 9+ must-have beauty buys for the best sleep ever

The ultimate fresh-air experience: The Chedi Spa, Andermatt, Switzerland

Skip the slopes at this alpine utopia and head to the spa. Here, you’ll benefit from the healing powers of that Alps air – without breaking a sweat – with the Alpienne Mountain Ritual. The three-hour treatment includes a full-body massage and body polish, using mountain-grown herbs, a facial and a steam bath.   READ MORE: How to properly take care of your nails come winter

A true no rush policy: The Guerlain Spa at the Waldorf Astoria, New York

Many spas tell you to relax and take your time post-treatment, but most of us feel pressure to get ready as soon as the “all finished” bell chimes. Not so at the Guerlain Spa, where every (impressively-skin-boosting) treatment comes with an added 20 minutes at the end. This time is for remaining in the well-appointed spa suite to have a shower, a snack or even just a nap. In a world where time is the ultimate luxury, this is an urban utopia.   READ MORE: An editor's dessert-inspired winter beauty routine

A truly private experience: Spa my Blend by Clarins, Velaa Private Island, The Maldives

The ultimate in privacy, this secluded floating villa (which costs around $39,000 a night) counts Nemo and friends as your only neighbours. The trip is worth it for the setting alone, but the luxe treatments, such as the customizable facial – during which your skin concerns are diagnosed and treated with a bespoke skincare program – are indulgent extras that even Dory would never forget.   READ MORE: The modern way to wear seductive scents
