“When shaving legs, underarms or bikini area, proper moisturization is a vital first step,” says shaving expert Jennifer Carnevale of Energizer Canada. “Never shave without first moistening dry hair with water, as dry hair is difficult to cut and breaks down the fine edge of a razor blade.”
2. When shaving your legs …
“Remember to shave in the direction of hair growth. Take your time and shave carefully over sensitive areas,” says Carnevale.

3. When shaving your bikini area …
Bumps and ingrown hairs no more. “Shave horizontally for your bikini, from the outside to the inside of the upper thigh and groin area, using smooth even strokes,” says Carnevale.
4. How often to shave
“How often you choose to shave is up to you but it is important to know that shaving every day exfoliates your skin and can keep your legs feeling great, especially if your hair grows quickly,” advises Carnevale. If your skin is dry or irritated swap out your usual razor for one with an added moisture kick. TRY: Schick Intuition’s Advanced Moisture razor.

5. Pick the best razor
Think of your razor as part of your usual skincare routine. “If you have sensitive skin, make sure you get a razor that is developed specifically for sensitive skin to get the best result,” advises Carnevale. TRY: Schick Hydro Silk Sensitive Care razors which contain hypoallergenic serum and are dermatologist-tested for sensitive skin.

6. Sharpness is key for hair removal
To prevent tugging and an uneven shave, a sharp blade is crucial according to Carnevale, so change the blades often.
Slather on the sunscreen with extra care post shave since will be more sensitive, advises Carnevale.
8. Rest period
“Give your skin 30 minutes rest between shaving and going swimming,” says Carnevale. “Freshly shaved skin is vulnerable to the stinging effects of chlorine and salt water, as well as suntan lotions and sunscreens that contain alcohol. Skin is at its most sensitive immediately after shaving. To prevent inflammation, let skin rest at least 30 minutes before jumping in the pool.”

9. Never use HIS razor
It may be tempting to just use his razor for a quick swipe or touch-up, but mens razors just aren’t built for women’s curves according to Carnevale. “With more curves and contours to shave, including sensitive areas like the underarms, women benefit most from razors designed specifically for their needs.”
10. It’s all about pressure
It’s an old myth that you need to press hard on your razor to get a closer shave. But these days, new razors are designed to give you the cleanest, smoothest shave possible, so ease up on the pressure!
