How to train like Kate: Swim

The duchess reportedly loves to splash about in the Buckingham Palace pool. (No word on whether she brings the duckie.) Swimming offers a full-body strength and cardio workout without stressing the joints. “It involves most major muscle group – your core stabilizes you in the water, your back, shoulder and arms work at the same time as your glutes and leg muscles,” says Caroline Lambray, a personal trainer at Mansfield Athletic Club in Montreal. Try laps for a cardio workout or an aquafit class to strength train.   READ MORE: Fat water is now a thing

How to train like Kate: Try a team sport

Okay, so you probably won’t see Kate at intramural ultimate Frisbee, but in her pre-royal life, she used to play sports all the time. (One of her faves? Field hockey.) Team sports are as good for the mind as they are for the body, according to Debbie Scott, the owner of Phoenix Personal Fitness Inc. in Calgary. “They offer a sense of belonging and allow individuals to work together for a common goal.” Read: they are a good option for people who hate working out in a gym.   READ MORE: 9 facts and fictions about cold and flu season you need to know now

How to train like Kate: Why not walk?

Of course we never get to see it, but Kate takes Prince George and Princess Charlotte for walks all the time. Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active, say our experts. “The benefits are similar to any other consistent exercise regime such as burning a few extra calories, increased cardiovascular endurance, lower blood pressure and cholesterol,” says Scott, noting this exercise targets mostly the lower body. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or call your mom or besties to go out for a stroll – without the hot chocolate and whipped cream to go.   READ MORE: 10 celebrities who are giving us major fitspo

How to train like Kate: Play tennis

While Kate is always front and centre at Wimbledon (here she is in the stands with her sister Pippa), she isn’t afraid to take to the courts herself. She loves to face off against Prince William and has said the two have “quite the competitive game.” Tennis helps to build cardiovascular and muscle endurance as well as agility, balance and core stability. Because it’s a competitive sport, you are more likely to push yourself harder, which means (hopefully) faster results!   READ MORE: How to avoid overeating at holiday parties

How to train like Kate: Run

Is it just us, or can you totally see she and William, pictured here at the London Olympics, jogging together like any young couple? Running is a great option for the busy mom because it is great cardio and burns lots of calories. New runners may want to try a learn-to-run program, says Lambray. “By doing things properly from the get-go, you will ensure long-term viability of your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, you name it.”   READ MORE: 6 steps to finding the perfect sports bra
