Hollywood hip list: Celeb diets

Virtuous veggies
You’ve got to hand it to Sir Paul McCartney. He has written a gajillion hit songs, and he is committed to helping the world with his food choices. “If you want to save the planet, all you have to do is stop eating meat,” he says. “That’s the single most important thing you could do. It’s staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.” You go, Paul.

Books
The PETA Celebrity Cookbook; Eat More, Weigh Less by Dr. Dean Ornish.

Rationale Ornish crushes the Atkins diet and explains that a low-fat vegetarian diet is the only way to long-term weight loss. Plus, you get a boost in energy, enjoy better sex and reduce your risk of dying from a heart attack.

Vegetarians Carrie Underwood, Prince, Pamela Anderson, Lisa Simpson of The Simpsons, Chrissie Hynde.

Mean-and-lean vegans
I’ve been pear-shaped since the day I was born, so, as much as I’d love to be called “skinny minny,” it isn’t going to happen. Ever. Still, the siren call from vegan bestsellers Skinny Bitch, Skinny Bitch in the Kitch and Skinny Bastard offers me some hope. Authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin promote eco-friendly eating, kindness to animals and healthful, enjoyable eating with organic fresh fruit, vegetables, lentils, beans and whole grains.

Book Coming in October, Skinny Bitch: Ultimate Everyday Cookbook by Kim Barnouin.

Rationale The first books were eco-friendly and full of girl power and tough love at its toughest. The authors promoted animal rights via a diet that avoids meat and animal products like milk, eggs and honey. Barnouin explains that her new cookbook is a practical, comprehensive guide to vegan cooking sans processed food. The book’s subtitle sums it up: Crazy Delicious Recipes That Are Good to the Earth and Great for Your Bod.

Vegans
Jessica Alba, Cindy Crawford, Eva Longoria Parker, André 3000.

Raw talents

Former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Carol Alt is the poster child for the raw-food movement. She has written several books on the subject and credits her high-fibre diet with the fact that she hasn’t suffered from flu, allergies or sinus troubles in years. Here’s the 411: Living and raw foodists believe in eating only an uncooked, unheated, unprocessed, organic plantbased diet. We’re talking in-season, fresh, raw fruits and vegetables, sprouted seeds, nuts, grains and beans and some fermented or heated foods that are properly combined for easy digestion. Starchy foods like bread, rice, wheat, pasta, potatoes, meat and dairy products are a no-no. Donna Karan lost 20 pounds on this diet—I’m just saying...

Books
LifeFood Recipe Book: Living on Life Force by Annie Padden Jubb and David Jubb; The Live Food Factor: The Comprehensive Guide to the Ultimate Diet for Body, Mind, Spirit & Planet by Susan Schenck.

Rationale With raw food, your body gets more water, oxygen, minerals and enzymes and more carbohydrates, proteins and fats “in a nutritive form that is as close to whole as nature would have delivered them,” says Dr. Richard DeAndrea, an internist and specialist in integrative medicine. “Eating organically whole fresh food can be very healing.”

Devotees Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore, Daryl Hannah, Edward Norton.

Meatheads
On the season premiere of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, Tori Spelling was filmed at a restaurant spitting a blob of steak down her blouse. It wasn’t because she doesn’t eat meat; it was because she was stuffed. (She was participating in a contest to consume two kilograms of meat in an hour. The prize was a free meal. She lost.) In an era when celebrities are more likely to talk about the merits of tempeh or quinoa, Spelling’s steakknife- clenching fingers certainly stand out. Apparently, celebrity carnivores aren’t as rare as you might think.

Book The Shameless Carnivore: A Manifesto for Meat Lovers by Scott Gold.

Rationale Eating meat may have become déclassé, writes Gold, but his research shows that tracking and hunting has aided in the development of human intelligence. It’s part of our destiny to eat meat.

Carnivores Jessica Simpson, George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Sharon Stone, Bobby Flay, Jonah Hill.
