9 healthy eating habits that can change your life

Imagine if your sleepless nights, high-blood pressure, anxious thoughts – or let’s be honest, all of the above – could be cured by what you eat. We know what you’re thinking: this is like having a magical closet that every time you open it, you find a new pair of Loubs. I.e. Never going to happen.

Celebrity nutritionist Haylie Pomroy begs to differ. Her latest book, Fast Metabolism Food RX, outlines customized meal plans and recipes that reset the body based on your personal health issues – from IBS to stress. “Everything that you put on your plate has the power to either enhance or detract from your health. And so it’s that power that you put on your plate at each meal,” she says. We’ve rounded up some of her top tips.

9 tips for your healthiest body: Recognize that no body or metabolism is the same

“You cannot tell me that the sandwich my little ninety-year-old, 92-pound grandmother eats for lunch does the same thing in her body that the sandwich a twenty-five-year-old, 250-pound weightlifter eats does in his body,” writes Pomroy. The lesson: stop comparing yourself to others and listen instead to your body and what it’s craving. READ MORE: Can you drink your way to glowing skin?

9 tips for your healthiest body: Make a health wish list

Pomroy asks all of her new clients to write down everything they wish to accomplish health-wise – even if it seems impossible. “The idea is to get them thinking beyond the scale. I say, ‘how do you feel about your hair, your skin, your nails? How do you feel about your energy? Are you sleeping deeply through the night?’’ The lesson: everything that you eat can influence the possibility of your wish list coming true. READ MORE: 5 things you need to know about souping

9 tips for your healthiest body: Always eat within 30 minutes of waking up

Think about all the moving parts of the body that must wake up when the alarm goes off – from the heart and brain to your hormones and neurotransmitters. “All these have specific micronutrient needs and if you aren’t meeting their needs [aka eating a well-balanced breakfast], those systems might not work as well as they should,” writes Pomroy. 9 tips for your healthiest body: You may have to give up coffee and alcohol (for a bit)

To reset the body, Pomroy advocates saying a (tearful) farewell to booze and your daily latte. Alcohol and caffeine can affect the body’s insulin and glucose levels as well as liver function. Giving it up, she says, “is like saying, ‘I want to be successful at a particular task and in order to be successful I’ve got to shut my phone off for a few minutes.’ I look at as we are removing road blocks to get the work done as fast as possible.” READ MORE: 10 ultra-nourishing body products to combat dry winter skin

9 tips for your healthiest body: Exercise can make you feel less tired (for realz)

Pomroy explains: “Because exercise takes more energy than everyday living, it triggers the body to…speed up its energy consumption; we burn fuel at an increased rate in the mitochondria (energy stores in cells) and that triggers the production of more energy.” READ MORE: Fitness battleground: the new generation of exercise classes will test your limits

9 tips for your healthiest body: But you deserve a break too

"The more energy you have, the more you’re likely to add to your to-do list, Pomroy noticed. Stop. Rest. And don’t feel guilty about it. “We lose the majority of our weight when we sleep. We grow the majority of our hair when we sleep. When we rest, that’s when our body takes the energy that we’ve now unleashed and it does something effective with it. And so that rest and restoration are so important in getting what you want in your body.” READ MORE: 5 easy beauty indulgences for (exhausted) new moms

9 tips for your healthiest body: Smoothies are cool, but skip the juices

"I want you to eat whole foods, and juices are not whole foods. They remove the fibre and also concentrate the sugars in vegetables and fruits, which can cause blood sugar instability,” she writes. READ MORE: These two new mattresses will guarantee your best sleep ever

9 tips for your healthiest body: Only eat nuts that have been soaked in water

This had us scratching our heads too at first. But Pomroy recommends soaking raw nuts and seeds in a glass jar with water for 24 hours. Doing so rid them of the phytic acid, which can block the body’s ability to absorb the nut’s nutrients. READ MORE: What is cloud bread and is it good for you?

9 tips for your healthiest body: Baby steps are fine

Let's be clear. You don’t have to throw yourself into Pomroy’s program. “Being enchanted with your own body is so important especially in young women. Start developing an intimate relationship with what your body is telling you. I always tell people to start incorporating power foods,” says Pomroy.
