Brian Phillips, Toronto-based hairstylist and owner of WorldSALON, on how to wear hair accessories:

• “The right hair accessory can up your cool quotient instantly,” says Phillips, “but if you’re going to wear a statement hairdo with bling, pare down your outfit.”
• Try out a few different options, depending on what you want to achieve, says Phillips. A tortoiseshell comb or an old-fashioned brooch (sewn to a hair clip) adds sparkle, and simple accessories like an extra-long shoelace or a handful of bobby pins make an edgy statement.
• Limit the bows and glitter to evening. For day, a subtle headband, leather string or modern barrette looks casual but polished.

Tight end
The key to a bump-free ponytail that won’t loosen lies in this unsuspecting elastic with hooks. “It’s really the number one tool for creating a tight ponytail,” says Hallie Bowman, a celebrity stylist for Pantene. “I always use it when I’m doing someone’s hair up and I want it to be super-slick.” The trick behind this secret weapon is its hooks: They eliminate the need to readjust the elastic, which causes snags and imperfections.

Pin number
After decades of hiding in the shadows of buns and bouffants, the plain-Jane bobby pin enjoyed the spotlight on the runways this fall. At Donna Karan, they created an abstract pattern that surrounded the models’ sleek chignons, and Orlando Pita played with a stack of bronze-hued pins to decorate the ladylike buns seen at Carolina Herrera.
