Fall hairstyles: 5 must-have looks

By: Karen Kwan

The looks may have ranged from ’60s Twiggy to deconstructed braids, but the one thing that hair from the Fall 2011 runways in common: they were all so gorgeous we have to have them ASAP. Find out how to get the look of five of our favourite fall hair looks.

Fall hairstyles: Casual braids as seen at Rag & Bone Fall 2011
This looks a bit bohemian and has a touch of “I don’t care” attitude. Replicate it by spraying some dry shampoo with your head flipped down, says, Greg May of Greg May Hair Architects in Toronto, for malleability and workability, and to give hair a matte finish. “Part your hair close to the centre, but not completely at the centre or it’ll look too done,” he says, adding that no one’s face is perfectly symmetrical anyhow. Take pieces (including some from inside the hair) and braid loosely, pulling pieces out and roughing up the ends with a comb a bit.

Fall hairstyles: Sleek, high-fashion wet look as seen at Derek Lam Fall 2011

Maybe the only very fashion-forward amongst us can carry off this look, but there’s no denying it’s a hot one. “The wet look is coming back,” says Brennen Demelo of Brennen Demelo Studio in Toronto. He says you’ll need a little practice but it is doable for most people. Start with flat ironing your hair. Then use a small-tooth comb and section your hair above the temples and apply a strong-hold serum or cream hair products to give it shine and a wet look. Help fix the style into place by spraying with a hold hairspray.

Fall hairstyles: Chic, easy waves as seen at Marni Fall 2011

“There’s something slightly French, sexy and undone about this hair,” says May. For this look, as with the one at Rag & Bone, you want a matte finish so if you have naturally wavy hair, use a sea salt spray on your wet hair and power dry it (you can try diffusing it, but he warns that your hair may turn out too curly for this look). Create a deep side part, with hair coming across the head (“almost like a combover,” jokes May). If your hairstyle is straight, you’ve got more work cut out for you: work in the sea salt or defining spray hair products through your hair, then using a two-inch barrel curling iron create loose waves.

Fall hairstyles: Slick twist with side part as seen at YSL Fall 2011

From the front, this look is very reminiscent of Twiggy and the 1960s. To get the look, May suggests using a glossing cream or high-shine laminate product on the hair.

Create a very deep side part (at the parietal ridge of the skull, says May, who notes that if you don’t make the part low enough, you’ll completely lose the look’s effect), and pull into a tight, low ponytail. Split the ponytail into two sections. Twist one section into a bun and then work the second section around and into the first bun to create more texture and detail. Finish with a high-shine hairspray, and a paddle brush to smooth out the look and slick down any flyaways.

Fall hairstyles: Slicked back, high ponytail as seen at Louis Vuitton Fall 2011

To get a look as super slick as this, you need to start by blow drying with a smoothing product, says Demelo. Continue by flat ironing your hair from root to tip to get it as smooth as possible. Using a soft bristle brush, pull hair back into a ponytail and secure with an elastic, pulling out a small strand to wrap around to conceal the elastic. Finish with a shine spray.
