Let’s face it—summer is hot enough as it is without adding in the warmth of your favourite heat styling tool when doing your hair. And it’s always best to give your hair a break from all that heat styling. Make life easy this summer with these three simple, wash and go hairstyles that give you extra time to spend at the beach or on a summer shopping spree. The best part? No curling wand, blow dryer or flat iron required. Susana Hong—hair and makeup artist for TRESemmé—gives her expert tips on hairstyles inspired by the Spring 2013 runways that can be whipped up this summer before your sunscreen sinks in.

Summer hairstyles: Simple HAIR LOOKS for every summer occasion

WASH AND GO HAIRSTYLE #1: THE LOW PONYTAIL OR CHIGNON

Spring 2013 runway inspiration: Akris, Jill Sander, Etro and Michael Kors

Styling time: 5 minutes

Get the look: Try a super easy low ponytail or chignon as your first go-to summer hair do. If you have naturally straight hair, start by parting your hair to the side with a comb. Next, gather your hair at the back of your head and secure it with a hair tie—or scrunchie if you’re feeling adventurous. Finish by twisting the hair into a knot at the base of your neck. And if you have natural curls? “The same steps, but you can leave texture and pull out some hair to frame your face for an undone version. For added texture, use a dry shampoo (try TRESemmé Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo) after securing your chignon,” says Hong. You’ll be out the door in no time.

WASH AND GO HAIRSTYLE #2: THE TEMPLE BRAID

Spring 2013 runway inspiration: Hervé Léger, Mulberry, Marchesa and Nicole Miller

Styling time:
7 minutes

Get the look:
This super trendy take on a traditional braid is easy to create and requires only minutes to do. Similar to your low pony, you want to start by creating a deep side part on the opposite side you want your braid. Then, grab a ½ inch section of hair just below your temple and divide this piece into three equal parts to begin braiding. “Gather more hair as your braid and stop gathering additional hair when you are approximately one inch behind the ear,” says Hong. Stop braiding at the base of your neck and complete the braid with a small elastic in a colour that matches your hair shade. You can then hide the end of the braid underneath the rest of your hair with a hairpin. Don’t be afraid to add a spritz of hairspray or serum to give your braid a glossy shine and to prevent breakage.

WASH AND GO HAIRSTYLE #3: THE MESSY, SLICK UPDO

Spring 2013 runway inspiration: Nina Ricci, Hermès and Roland Mouret

Styling time: 10 minutes

Get the look: This messy, slick updo literally is wash and go because you don’t have to wait for it to dry to style. Start by working a small amount of hair gel into your damp tresses (try TRESemmé Texture Ultra Firm Control Gel), using a wide-toothed comb to work the product through. “Comb in an upward direction on the crown of the head, and comb backwards on the sides of the head. This will ensure that the top maintains a bit of volume while the sides remain tighter,” says Hong. Finish up by pulling your hair into a ponytail in the middle of your head, securing it with an elastic and twisting the hair into a messy bun. Add a few pins to help the hair stay in place and don’t be concerned with the size or shape of the bun because this adds a unique look to every updo. Presto—3 effortless wash and go hairstyles you won’t be able to live without this summer.
