Hair hurdles

Hair helpers
Analysis Cutting off damaged locks is an instant, albeit sometimes drastic, solution. However, there are less daunting alternatives. "You need to assess the type of damage and then you select a treatment based on the hair's texture,"says Tony Chaar, owner of Tony Chaar Salon in Toronto.
Moisture If you have fine hair, delicately apply a leave-in deep conditioner or, in the case of dehydration, a water-based protein mask for added moisture. Thicker strands require a protective oil-based treatment for nourishment and conditioning, while sun-dried locks benefit from a heavy coating of an oil-based protein mask.

Some products to try Alterna Caviar Rejuvenation Treatment ($75) is an in-salon conditioning and rejuvenation system that minimizes sun damage. John Frieda Life Preserver Hair Conditioning Oil ($10) protects hair from the drying effects of the sun, chlorine and salt water, while John Frieda Beach Blonde Kelp Help ($10) is ideal as a deep-conditioning protein mask for all hair types. Rene Furterer Karité Nourishing Conditioning Cream ($32.20) is best for coarse, dry and damaged hair. Joico K-PAK Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor ($17.45) conditions dry and damaged hair. Redken Extreme Rescue Force ($19.50) counteracts over-processing and chlorine. AG Hair Cosmetics Ultramoist Moisture Treatment ($12) hydrates all hair types, leaving hair soft and shiny.
