Bold berry lips and sexy metallic eyes: That's the theme for fall's prettiest makeup.

Cherry blossom
Red lips are timeless, but this year's version features a new colour palette and texture, says Joe Costa, key makeup artist with Yves Saint Laurent. "Lips aren't flat," he says. "They have more dimension, like incredible fabrics." So, toss your lip brush and use your fingertips for a stained effect. Cool reds, like the berry and merlot shades at DSquared2 and Rodarte, look freshest. Pair them with strong brows and minimal eye makeup.

Skin
Cover under-eye circles and any imperfections with a creamy concealer; remember to warm it between your fingertips before applying and gently tap it in place. For a velvety finish, use your fingertips to smooth on a medium-coverage, matte foundation, blending it out from the centre of your face. A tinted illuminating moisturizer will give you a dewier look. Eliminate any shine with a light dusting of translucent powder.

Eyes
Use a black eyeliner pencil to line the upper lash line. "Leave the lower lash line clean to keep your eyes subtle," says Costa. Add dimension by applying a soft taupe or grey eyeshadow in the crease. Curl your lashes and brush on a coat of black volumizing mascara.

Brows
Choose a brow powder or pencil within a shade or two of your hair colour and apply it in light, short strokes using a flat, angled brush.

Lips
