2013 beauty trend: Indulge in knottiness
- Picture 8/9
Although piling your hair into a messy topknot will always give you that instant, model off-duty look, a more polished choice seen on the runways (including Altuzarra and Ralph Lauren) is a sleek knot at the nape of the neck, with pins and elastics completely hidden, creating the illusion of the hair knotting into itself. Simple, natural perfection.

2013 beauty trend: Lashes are spidery, or natural
- Picture 9/9
Think heavy and obvious, à la Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton—a 1960s-type of spidery lash (envision Twiggy when applying your mascara), or when wearing with a bright lip (see above), lashes look just right when your make them look like yours, only better. That is, lashes are defined and distinct, but not in an OTT Kim Kardashian way.

2013 beauty trend: Parts go deep, diagonal and zigzag
- Picture 2/9
Last year's braid craze continues into this year—we spotted intricate looking styles on the runways for Balmain and The Row—but a simpler and pretty way you can change up your hairstyle this year? Change how your part your hair. The deep side part was all over the red carpet for both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (so pretty on Julianne Moore and Jessica Chastain, to name just a few), Why stick your usual middle part when you can go diagonal or even in a zigzag? Best of all, this is a trend we can all easily experiment with—with zero commitment required.

2013 beauty trend: Nail the look with nudes and taupes, and a playful brightness
- Picture 3/9
"For spring we're going see two colour stories," says Tom Bachik, L’Oreal Paris consulting nail expert. "We're going to see a lot of nudes. The whole greige thing from a few years back started this whole nude trend and this year, we are going to see almost foundational skin tones, almost like a mannequin look," he says. Bachik loves this look because even with short nails, a nude makes the fingers look longer, slender and more elegant. And he also feels people want excitement and fun with colour, so from now through spring, summer and winter, he calls for colours to overall be brighter—blues, greens and more wearable oranges (more on the pinky tangerine side of things rather than safety-cone orange).
