Surface matter
We all strive for complexion perfection, but acne scars, birthmarks and overall dullness can leave us reaching for heavy makeup to cover up. The newest resurfacing technologies bring smooth, radiant skin within reach.

•Best for...DULL, ROUGH SKIN: Plasma therapy.
Known as Portrait skin rejuvenation, this new resurfacing tool brightens and smooths skin, improving texture and tone. The device sends plasma energy (a form of magnetized glass) through the dermis without direct contact with the skin. The epidermis is left intact and acts as a bandage, while the skin beneath regenerates and produces new collagen and elastin. Although there is some downtime (about one week), only one 45- to 60-minute session (about $3,000) is needed to treat areas like the face, neck, chest and hands. There's visible improvement for the next six to nine months as more collagen is generated.

•Best for...SCARRING: Fraxel laser resurfacing.
Are you suffering from surface scars or deep, pock-marked acne scarring? In the past, these skin concerns were treated with carbon dioxide lasers, which removed the entire upper layer of the skin; though they were effective, they required weeks of recovery time. Now, the Fraxel laser can achieve similar results without the lengthy downtime. "The beams extend from the surface of the skin down to the dermis, stimulating new collagen formation and allowing a new, smooth epidermis to form," says Weksberg. Five or six treatments (ranging from $200 to $1,500 each, depending on the area being treated) are usually needed, and redness and swelling can last anywhere from one day to one week, depending on the strength of the treatment. Results are permanent, unless you experience more acne, hormonal changes or sun exposure.

•Best for...AGE SPOTS AND PIGMENTATION: Erbium laser.
This treatment uses infrared light to target water in the skin; the skin cells soak up the water, which allows them to be removed without absorbing a great deal of heat. While only one treatment (from $900 to $2,500) is necessary, you'll have about a week of downtime. Again, results are usually permanent, unless you experience more acne, hormonal changes or sun exposure post-treatment.

A healthy lifestyle contributes to good skin but that alone does not reverse the signs of aging. Im a makeup artist in the film industry&have been using microdermabrasion and cold laser therapy for years and the results are priceless, with no risk or downtime. The lasers and gels are incredibly expensive to purchase, that is why treatments may seem a little "pricey" ,but it is well worth it. Laser and light therapy are not new techniques and have been proven to work.

Although cost is definitely a factor for me, my first conce
is safety and not doing something irreversible to my skin or body.

How much would it cost for me to buy better genes in the first place so that I didn't end up with the cellulite, stretchmarks, wobbly arms, and thunderthighs that I inherited from my Mother's side of the family?!?!?! I'd pay a fortune for genotherapy!

I for one have terrible scars from childhood which includes sexual abuse and so on. I have never been able to lead a normal life for embarrassment of it. My GP's has tried to get help but our medical will not pay for it. Yet there are people getting medical help to get rid of tattoos for free. To give you an idea I've never ever wo
a swinsuit, now the stress is showing badly on the face etc. Where does one get the $$$ or help for these treatments.

Get over it. It has nothing to do with being "rich". These are some of the latest technological advancements, obviously there is going to be a high cost.

I agree with the above comments. I'm a single mom and would LOVE to change the appearance of parts of my body. At these prices, short of winning the lottery...it will remain a dream!!!

I totally agree I would like to take advantage of some of these procedures but it will never happen at the current costs and also the fact that the results for so many of them last for such a short time.

This is all great for the "rich"...but, at some point cosmetic medical advancements must allow for broader availability ( cost being the greatest hurdle for most..)
