Ask a derm
Q: What does vitamin C do for the skin, and what's the best way to reap its benefits?
A:
"Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant," says Dr. Lisa Kellett of DLK On Avenue. "It clears away free radicals, which impair skin healing. The ideal way to get your vitamin C is through diet and a multivitamin, but topical applications have an antioxidant effect as well. Most over-the-counter creams contain two to five
percent, which may be effective, or a pharmacist can prepare a 35-percent vitamin C solution that you can add to your face cream. Mild creams can be used twice a day, but more-potent formulations should be used only in the morning."
