Slow motion
Some tiny enzymes called sirtuins are generating a big buzz in beauty circles these days. These naturally occurring proteins play a protective role in cellular function and, when stimulated, may even extend the lifespan of cells. According to Toronto dermatologist Nowell Solish, stimulating sirtuin activity can inhibit the aging process, but more research is needed to determine just how deeply sirtuin-activating products penetrate. “Resveratrol and other sirtuin ‘enhancers’ have been shown to boost sirtuin activity in lab studies, but they’re not absorbed well by the body,” he says. Even so, many sirtuin-based formulations — including Clinique Youth Surge SPF 15 Age Decelerating Moisturizer, Avon Anew Ultimate Elixir Premium and REN Sirtuin Phytohormone Replenishing Cream — are hitting the market.
REPAIR WORK
A new batch of high-performance skin-care products may encourage skin cells to repair their DNA at a faster rate. “The body repairs DNA naturally,” says Solish, adding that some topicals allow this process to occur more quickly because they provide some protection from environmental stressors. That’s where lines like Dermaglow’s DermaDNA come in. “The bioDNA complex in our Cellular Repair serum protects skin from oxidative stress and stimulates the skin’s own antioxidant enzymes,” says Kathleen Elliot, head of product development and research for Dermaglow. Your Transformation, a DNA repair line from Canyon Ranch, contains a form of vitamin B³ that stimulates the skin’s wound-healing response, says Kristine Cryer, vice-president of product development. Résist-Âge Métamulsion Cell-Matrix, a range from Canadian brand Lise Watier that has been formulated to stimulate the skin’s repair system, also launches this spring.
