Backstage at the Sid Neigum Fall 2015 show at Toronto Fashion Week, beauty editors huddled around makeup artist Grace Lee. As Maybelline's Lead Makeup Artist for Canada, Lee is responsible for conceptualizing and executing every single look during Toronto Fashion Week. But last night was especially exciting, as Lee was creating a cutout cat eye for Canada's "fashion darling" (her words—not that we disagree!) Sid Neigum. "The look was really about innocence meets darkness," said Lee, as she precisely painted on matte black eyeliner. "There's a lot of black in his collection, so I wanted to mimic it in the face with clean, pure looking skin." Lee achieved this by patting on a primer to minimized redness, then applied concealer to places where skin was slightly uneven. But this was restrained, said Lee, who told her team to avoid foundation unless the models required extensive coverage. "It was about spot concealing." Brows were muted slightly with concealer as well, with the intention of placing more focus on the eyes. And speaking of the graphic eye, it was inspired by the cutouts that Neigum has become known for. Lee suggested playing up the idea of negative space, and Neigum was intrigued. She built the look using a combination of Maybelline Eye Studio Master Graphic Eyeliner in Striking Black with the brand's gel eyeliner. "By creating negative space in the inner corner, you're getting that two tone inner corner line," Lee says. She drew a straight rectangle toward the outer corner, then took a Q-tip to remove segments of the liner, keeping the look consistent with all models. Lips were finished with concealer and Maybelline BabyLips in Clear.
