Talking beauty with Tei Shi

Is there a difference between your beauty look when you’re offstage as Valerie Teicher vs. onstage performing as Tei Shi? Not really. It’s pretty true to me as a person. But I guess in certain senses I feel a bit more liberty to play around with different things [as Tei Shi], just knowing that I get a chance to perform and try different aesthetics. My daily style, I guess, is pretty casual. So it’s a little bit more of an extension of that. You switch your hair up a lot. What motivates you to go from having bleach blond to mermaid blue hair to orange hair…? Honestly, it’s just boredom. I get very restless. I just think that it’s not necessarily based off of ‘Oh, I hate how I look today’ – it’s just that I like to switch it up. I like forcing myself to do different things.

And have you always been like that? Or do you find that you’ve grown into this more adventurous beauty style as you grew into your sound? I’ve definitely always had a bit of an interest in being adventurous with style. It’s almost like you get a little bit more of an excuse to change it up when people are watching you on stage. What does your normal stage makeup consist of? It’s always the same. That’s the one thing that’s the most different [between her onstage and offstage beauty routines]: For shows, I do my own makeup on a daily basis, and after I’m like ‘I don’t want to ever fucking see makeup ever again!’ I’ll put on some concealer under the eyes, because I’m usually pretty tired. Then some eyeliner – the cat eye is my go-to, and the one thing I can do well. And then just, like, a lip colour.

Do you have a favourite eyeliner to use when you do a cat eye? Yes, I use Stila eyeliner – it’s just a black liquid pen. Classic. [I’ll use] whatever’s good that doesn’t smudge, because I sweat a lot during shows.

You travel with a group of guys, has that changed your beauty routine at all? Oh, absolutely. It’s very rare that we’ll play a show that we get there and there’s a green room with [good] lighting. It’s a treat when that happens. Especially when we’re on tour doing festivals. This past month, I was doing makeup in the van in-between shows, and in the bathroom and stuff. It’s good because you get better with [applying makeup] on the go. At first, I was a bit hesitant or embarrassed to be like ‘Oh no I need to do my makeup!’ but now it’s just part of it. I try to keep it not too complicated so I can do it on the go.

Are you particular about makeup removal? I take [my makeup] off every night, only because I’m kind of anal when it comes to cleanliness. I’m not, like, a freak, but if I go to bed not clean, I feel really gross. So before bed I use those makeup towelette things, the blue pack, what’s it called… Neutrogena? Yes, Neutrogena. You just wipe and it’s off – wash your face, and then you’re good to go. When you’re just hanging out at a festival, are there any products you always make sure to bring? I definitely have chapstick, always. I like the Burt's Bees one. I usually carry hand towelettes, kind of like hand sanitizer, which is totally a beauty thing! Other than that, I keep my makeup on me just in case, for touch-ups. But otherwise my bag is full of tea and cough drops and stuff.
