1. Runny Eye Makeup
Sephora Pro Team Member Adi Lando recommends waterproof mascara as your first line of defense against raccoon eyes. He says, “With the summer season, we often encounter the problem of runny eye make-up due to the hot weather. Waterproof mascara is an essential item this season and is easy to find since most mascaras already come water and smudge proof. Dior Show Waterproof Mascara is an excellent choice for everyone.” If a slick-proof liner is what you’re after, Lando recommends Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil for pencil eyeliners, and Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner for liquid eye liners as it has a pen tip that is easy to use. “And,” says Lando, “if you fancy a cream liner, Caviar (true jet black) Cream Eye Liner by Smashbox will do the trick.”

Another option? “Use concealer,” he says. “That, with powder, will help set your face and will increase the longevity of your overall complexion.” Stila Perfecting Concealer or Tarte Erase Concealer are great options as they last the entire day, and, when it comes to powder, you can’t go wrong with Make Up Forever Super Matte Loose Powder.

Frolicking in the pool, lounging in the hot sun, and swimming in the sea can all take a toll on your tresses, leaving them bone-dry and breakable. Stylist and hair guru Marc Anthony recommends a thin layer of leave-in conditioner or treatment – such as his own Damage Repair Treatment – on the hair before hitting the pool. “The more protein you put in your hair, the more protected it is, so that the chlorine doesn’t get in,” he says.

Blonds beware: your hair – especially if it is processed – is especially susceptible to turning chlorine-green, a hue that only comes out with a trip to the salon for a stripping treatment.

3. An Oily Complexion
In the summer months, skin naturally produces more oil, so starting with an oil-free sunscreen, such as Hourglass Veil Fluid Makeup Oil Free SPF 15 or Dermalogica’s Oil Free Matte SPF 20, for the face is a must. After that, add a primer to help “matte-ify” your skin (try CARGO blu_ray™ High Definition Mattifier). Then apply a light weight oil-free foundation like L’Oréal Paris’ Bare Naturale Mineral Foundation. “To keep your foundation set, dust loose powder all over your face,” says Lando, who likes Sephora Brand Matifying Compact Powder. A great trick to keep the oiliness at bay is to have blotting papers in your purse to absorb shine throughout the day. “This will also help in making your foundation last longer.”

4. Tan Lines
“The only safe tan is a fake tan and make tan lines easy to avoid!” said Lando. But, if you must indulge in a little beach action, apply sunscreen all over your face and body evenly and reapply often. And, try to avoid wearing darker clothing as it attracts the sun and can exacerbate tan lines.

If you happen to end up with some lines anyway, L’Oréal Paris makeup artist Eddie Maleterre recommends using a self-tanner like L’Oréal Paris’ Sublime Bronze Gradual, or a more subtle product like L’Oréal Paris’ Sublime Glow, all over. “I would use a concealer or foundation on the face that is slightly darker than your usual shade. It will help blend in your tan lines so they’re less noticeable.”

6. Body Breakouts
Not only is summer sweatiness unsexy, but it can lead to some unsavory side effects such as body breakouts. The key to banishing these blemishes lies in a salicylic acid-packed bodywash – try Neutrogena’s Body Clear Body Scrub. Then, you can follow up with a spray treatment like Acne Solutions Body Treatment Spray from Clinique.

7. Fading Hair Colour
If you want to make that salon visit last, “keep your hair covered from the sun,” recommends Anthony. But, if you must let your tresses blow free, use a colour-protecting shampoo and conditioner with UV protection built in: we dig Marc Anthony’s Brilliant Colour products. Add a silicone-based serum like Marc Anthony’s Moisture Gloss to give hair a moisture-rich protective layer.
