MFW Fall 2015: Naked faces at Gucci

There was much hype surrounding today's Fall 2015 Gucci show at Milan Fashion Week. That's because there's a new creative director at the helm of the iconic brand, and his name is Mr. Alessandro Michele. The gossip detailing the house's changes are about as juicy as an Italian soap opera (swift exits, name-calling). And since Michele wasn't so much a name (i.e. Tom Ford), there was uncertainty in the air regarding the brand's direction. And there certainly was a shift—this collection was all about young, bohemian romantics, and this softer message was translated seamlessly into naked skin, achieved by the masterful face painter Pat McGrath. For Gucci's Fall 2015 show, she created a clean, naked face using Gucci Lustrous Glow Foundation and Luminous Perfecting Concealer (weep—neither are avail in Canada). Also, a slapdash of lip balm. It's the whole "no makeup makeup" thing (we need a new shorthand for this) but less literal. This was a serious left turn for the brand. In previous seasons, McGrath cooked up some OTT, sexy and very strong makeup looks for the 94-year-old fashion house. From sex pot smoky eyes eyes to bare lids and lip balm? Eeek. As for hair, it was nothing and everything all at once. Hairstylist Paul Hanlon executed an equally naked approach to the hair, with some girls sporting random washes of pink, bangs, berets or flower combs. Models were instructed to go to bed with wet hair, so that perfectly imperfect texture could be achieved (I know mine looks *just* like this when I try that routine at home). Another (AMAZING) shocker? Canadian model Emma Genier walked the show too! If you missed our exclusive interview with her about her NYFW debut, click here. Will this pared-back tone setting the aesthetic for Milano? Stay tuned.
