After the month-long red carpet award seasons, I always discover new-found motivation for my fitness routine. This year was no exception. So, with the vision of Gwyneth Paltrow’s sleek cream Tom Ford column dress emblazoned in my mind, I decided to jump-start my health kick with a week-long detox. Taking my cue from celebs like Salma Hayek, Gwyneth Paltrow and even George Clooney, I opted for a juice cleanse. My drink of choice? Total Cleanse, a Canadian-based company that delivers natural, fresh and handmade juices to your door and minimizes the workload. Naturally blended juices are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that help jump-start your metabolism and rid your body of built-up toxins. Now, here is the part when I make a shameful confession: My cleanse lasted one day. Before you turn your back in disgust, I did learn some valuable lessons and, if nothing else, I’m an excellent source for what not to do. Here’s are my key takeaways: Cleanse tip 1: Pick and choose Decide what you want from your cleanse and what your end objectives are. Most cleanses aim to either purify, energize, revitalize or refresh your system. Consider the number and variety of juice options that each cleanse offers and choose one that works for you. Cleanse tip 2: Jump-start In addition to substituting sugar, meat and dairy with fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts and seeds, I was instructed to ditch coffee and all alcohol (yes, that includes red wine) the week before my cleanse. If you continue your habits up until the first day of your cleanse, trust me: You will pay for it. Cleanse tip 3: Hunger blackout Warm herbal tea flavoured with lemon will keep you properly hydrated and help control hunger. Added bonus? The warmth of the tea is a welcome break from the chilled juices. Cleanse tip 4: Timing While certain co-workers credit my cleanse fail to a lack of willpower (cough, Kathryn Hudson, cough), I prefer to highlight the fact that I opted to begin my cleanse on a Monday. As I'm a caffeine addict who neglected to pre-cleanse properly (seriously, tip 1 is key), it came down to my cleanse or my career. Decisions had to be made. Though I didn’t succeed in my cleanse, I’m still intrigued by the idea of dedicating a week to detoxifying your body and boosting your energy levels. Next time, I’ll just opt to do it far from the office, ideally on a remote beach oasis. If you’ve tried your own juice cleanse, we’d love to hear your tips and tricks.
