How to do your makeup to perform in front of 20,000 people

Rihanna's "Anti" tour dancer breaks down her pre-show routine.

As Rihanna winds down the North American leg of her Anti tour, we caught up with Canadian dancer Winnie Chang to find out her pre-show beauty and workout routine.

Tell us about the makeup look for this tour: What’s the vibe? Is it just one look for the whole show?

I think the look is a very clean, neutral-toned eye with shimmer on the middle of the lid, our cheeks, chin and forehead for a pop onstage. We have a black lip to act as an accent to our neutral-toned theme. We keep the one look for the entire show, and I do my own makeup. I think I learned how to do my own stage makeup starting at a young age when I would have to do my own makeup for dance competitions in the car [laughs].

I use M.A.C Cosmetics Liquid Studio Fix Foundation, Anastasia Contouring Kit, Kat Von D Eye Palette, Make Up For Ever Liquid Eyebrow Gel, House of Lashes Iconic or Red Cherry Lashes, Gerard Cosmetics Liquid Liner, a Christian Dior shimmer (I don't know the exact name), M.A.C Cosmetics Mineralize Skin Finish, Kat Von D Face Primer and M.A.C Cosmetics Prism Blush.

My stage makeup is completely opposite from my everyday look. I don't actually like to wear a lot of makeup regularly.

That amazing dark, vampy lip: What product/colour is it?

It’s the Kat Von D Poe Studded Lipstick. I actually use an eyeliner pencil to line my lips and color it in halfway, then apply the lipstick itself.

How long does your makeup need to last during the show?

Our makeup needs to last [for] about an hour of the show – through seven [dance] numbers. I have to just touch-up the centre of my lipstick in between [routines] just so they stay nice and bold. Most of the time a finishing spray will do the trick, although I usually forget to use it. I think M.A.C Cosmetics foundation has always done me well through long sweaty auditions and performances so I never really have to worry about it coming off. I just make sure I dab the really sweaty parts of my face so that it doesn't leave streak marks.

What do you use to take off your makeup after each show?

I like to use oil-based cleansers to break down all the makeup, and then do a second cleanse using the pink face scrub pad from Sephora and Boscia Detoxifying Black Cleanser.

Do you have any special skincare routines/treatments you do?

[In the morning], I cleanse with the Boscia Detoxifying Black Cleanser, followed by a toner – right now it's a witch hazel one from Whole Foods. Depending on what my skin needs I either follow through with a Vitamin C serum or a hydrating serum, and then finish with my Belif Aqua Bomb Hydrating Gel.

[At] night, I cleanse with oil, then the Boscia cleanser, followed with toner, then my Nip Fab Glycolic Fix Serum and finish with retinol moisturizer. Every few days I like to use my Japanese Natural Aqua Gel to gently exfoliate and use either a detoxifying neem [clay] mask or a hydrating mask from Belif.

These are all products that I'm currently using but I like to change things up every so often.

Your travel schedule is insane. How do you find time to fit in workouts?

It’s different depending on how the shows line up. Sometimes we do three shows in a row and literally leave on the bus [right] after the show to go directly to the next venue, and sometimes we get a couple days off in a row. To be honest, it's been hard to keep up a very consistent workout routine on the road. It's exhausting sometimes being on a bus for around 15 hours and not getting the best rest. But I do my best to workout when I can! I still do my same workouts that I do back home: weight training and sprints on the treadmill.

What type of exercise did you do leading up to the tour?

I actually didn't workout leading up to the tour because rehearsals were long and demanded a lot of my energy and time, so I didn't want to overdo it. We were rehearsing pretty much everyday for at least eight hours for a month and a half straight. But [it was] well worth it!
