We should have figured that, when it comes to summer beauty, the pearlized aqua look and beachside lounging get along swimmingly. Giorgio Armani knew what was up when he complemented watery chiffon frocks with a shimmer of turquoise eye shadow and
soft coral lips for his Spring/Summer 2013 runway show.

For the rest of us who want to capture the aquatic look, we chatted with Heather Nightingale, lead artistry expert for Make Up For Ever, for her expert makeup tips on recreating the ethereal, underwater look on land and sea.

Get the aqua look: Keep a fresh face

“Summer is just around the corner,” says Nightingale, “so enjoy your summer fun with melt-proof and sweat-proof makeup.” For this, it’s best to
avoid creamy, thick foundations during summer months. Create with an even, water-resistant complexion that’s both lightweight and long wearing. Try Make Up For Ever Face & Body foundation, and play up the rest of your look with splashy hues on your lids or lips.

Get the aqua look: Try turquoise eyeliner

“I have always called turquoise a ‘universal hue’,” says Nightingale. “It’s surprisingly beautiful on all eyes, regardless of the shape or colour.” Bonus? It’s flattering for almost all skin tones as well, which is why we’re drawn to it for summer. Just look to the turquoise outline that caught our eye at Stella McCartney’s Spring/Summer 2013 runway show.

For a perfect, precise line along the eye, use a freshly sharpened point on your eyeliner (Nightingale recommends Make Up For Ever’s new Aqua Eyes eyeliner in Lagoon Green). Start at the outside corner of the upper lash line, drawing a thin line downwards and across to the centre of the eye. Move your pencil to trace along the inner corner of the upper lash line, and glide the pencil towards the middle to connect the line. Finish the look with two coats of waterproof mascara.

Get the aqua look: Play up your best feature

Sure, it’s a water-inspired look, but let’s not go overboard here. “I suggest keeping it simple for summer,” says Nightingale. “I usually advise clients who want to add a pop of colour but are not sure where to start, to choose one feature on their face that they wish to focus on—either eyes or lips.” Try a wash of colour on the eyes with an aqua eyeliner or a pop of colour to the lips—think pomegranate or coral. Be sure to define lips with a creamy, matte lip liner in a matching shade.

Red lip: How to find your PERFECT SHADE

“You need to try different looks and colours before you can figure out which ones suit you best.” But you’re in luck. “It’s the best time to try this, since colour is always encouraged in the summer months.” For a light wash of colour in day or night, opt for a
pastel eye shadow in minty green or pearlized mauve shades.

Get the aqua look: Be subtle and bold

The bottom line with this look is colour: how liberally (and how much) you apply is up to you. “It’s so exciting to see such vibrant colours!” Nightingale says. “I absolutely love
fuchsia and corals on the lips, they’re perfect for summer and so easy to wear on the beach or other summer-fun occasions.”

Must try: 10 never fail EYELINERS

Complement the coral lip with a cream eye shadow in a pearly pastel green. Or try the bold approach with
this season’s hottest hue: emerald. “It’s so easy to try this simple pop of colour on the eyes—start by applying it as an eye liner or mascara.” In which case, go all out with a glossy fuchsia lip.
