Fall beauty trend: The new metallic smoky eye

From Chanel to Narciso Rodiguez, the look for fall is a strong, metallic eye. This may come as no surprise—the cooler weather always seems to bring this trend back. “I always look forward to the fall when we get back to rich jewel tones and metallics,” says Lori Taylor, Pro Lead Artist from Smashbox Cosmetics. “In the spring we see a lot of soft washes and in summer, warmer corals and blues – like what we see at the beach and sea – but in the fall, like the tweeds and other textures in fashion, metallics add texture in makeup,” she says.

Although Taylor doesn’t believe there are rules when it comes to makeup, she shared some suggestions on how to pull off the look:

Consider your eye colour.
Blue eyes will work well with a coppery tone or a warm, beige-y metallic. Green and hazel eyes will show off a violet, cabernet or lavender grey best. And as for brown-eyed girls? Taylor says you’re the luckiest as you can wear any shade of metallic there is. “Your brown eyes will support any colour,” she says. But if you really want to make them pop, a purple shade is your best bet.

Go soft for everyday (or if you’re feeling timid).
“You can’t go wrong with a soft wash of colour all over your lid,” says Taylor. This would work well with a warm brown or grey metallic. For shy types, simply opt for a shade one to two shades darker for your evening look. For bold types, you can try a smoky eye. Go for it during the day if you’re feeling bold, or reserve for the evening if it feels a bit much for you for the day. “A smoky eye doesn’t have to be grey or brown—it’s more modern when a smoky eye technique is done with a colour,” says Taylor, adding that navy or teal would be very on trend.

Be sure to add liner.

“You can stay within the same colour family and use a liner a couple of shades darker to add definition,” says Taylor. Or play up the look by using a bit of colour – navy blue or a deep bronze liner would look hot. A metallic green/grey liner would also work well. “This is a cameleon-like shade, it’s very forgiving,” she says.
