Ready to slick one lip colour on your upper lip and another on the bottom? How about rubbing in a plum-sized worth of gel into your hair to slick it down (or tying on a ponytail extension that’d give Rapunzel a run for her money?) This edgy aesthetic may not be a look everyone can pull off, but mega beauty props to those of you who can (and for those shying away from it, read on to find out how to take it down a notch).

MAKEUP:

“The makeup was inspired by the bright, fun colours in the Coccolily collection,” says Amélie Ducharne, artistic director for makeup for Montreal Fashion Week and Cover Girl makeup pro. As with many of the looks we’ve seen this week, it all starts with a flawless canvas of beautiful, natural-looking skin. Key products to achieve this: Cover Girl cream foundation, with a neutral pressed powder for contouring.

Then, to give, the skin a pretty, dewy effect, Ducharme used a lip gloss—Cover Girl Shine Blast clear lip gloss—dabbed onto the upper cheekbone in a C-shape (the C arcing up over the brow) with her fingers.

Next up, the eyes: Take Cover Girl Eye Enhancer 110 Shimmering Sands and use the bronze shade on the left applied all over the lid and to line the lower lash line with a fluffy brush. Then use the pale pink highlighter on the right side of this palette to add some subtle sparkle to the inner corners. Add further emphasis to the eyes by coating your lashes with Cover Girl Lash Blast Fusion in Black.

And now for our favourite part of this look: the lipstick. The shades are equally bright and bold—so much so that it took a double-take for us to notice that the upper lip was done in a vivid magenta (Cover Girl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor in Hottie) and the lower lip in a show-stopping red (Cover Girl Outlast All-Day Lip Color in Ever Red-dy). Ducharme kept the lips super matte to contrast with the dewy skin. To get the same matte effect, brush on your first coat of lipstick, blot with a tissue, then apply a light layer of translucent powder and apply a second coat of lipstick.

Two shades of
lipstick too bold for you? Another way you can try the look that’s a little less out there is to apply your darker shade of lipstick on as usual and then apply the brighter shade to the middle of your lips for a surprising burst of colour.

HAIR:

“We decided to go very contemporary with the hair,” says creative director for hair at MFW, Denis Binet, noting the collections bright colours and the afro electro music chosen for the runway show. For casting, models with very strong personalities were chosen, “girls with a different look and spirit,” he says. “And then for hair we went with extremes—either extremely short hair, or extremely long.” Models with medium to long hair were all given extra long hair by sweeping the hair back into a ponytail and adding a waist-length ponytail extension. Models with short hair, on the other hand, had their hair slicked back with a serious amount of gel. “We want it to be flat, flat, flat,” says Binet. Using a fine-tooth comb, he repeatedly combed the gelled hair back until it lay as flat to the scalp as possible. Then, to make sure the hair stayed slicked down even underneath the hot lights backstage, he affixed a strip of tissue across the hair line and bobby pinned it into place. “We’ll remove it right before the show and apply some Pantene Pro-V Shine Serum Gloss to make it extra glossy,” says Binet.
