6 beauty hacks to get you through a date without a bag full of products

1. Choose your lip formula carefully.

If you’re going to wear lipstick, it’s the one product you’ll always need to bring along. (Sorry.) Prep lips by gently exfoliating with a lip scrub or washcloth, then moisturize. Using a lip liner under your long-wearing lipstick is one way to make colour last, but if you’re going to be eating and/or drinking and have a tendency to assume the worse (Lipstick on teeth! Lipstick on chin! Etc.), stick with a sheer wash of colour that won’t be as obvious if it starts to fade or move around. These vitamin-enriched balms from CoverGirl are super hydrating and offer just a hint of colour, so you can reapply with abandon. (I.e. without a mirror). CoverGirl Colorlicious Oh Sugar! Vitamin Infused Balm in Jelly ($9.99), at drugstores and mass-market retailers. READ MORE: 12 gifts the ELLE Canada beauty team would not hate to receive on Valentine's Day

2. Dab the oil.

If you tend to get a little "dewy" as the night wears on - even under candlelight - make like makeup artists backstage at New York Fashion Week and grab the nearest tissue to mattify skin. Just hold it over your face and gently tap down on the oily areas. No extra powder needed. Kleenex Everyday Tissues Wallet Pack ($1.50), at drugstores and mass-market retailers. The next time you head stateside, pick up a bunch of these disposable brushes, which aren't available in Canada yet. (We were also able to track them down online.) These products are date night livesavers. Toss them into your bag to clean teeth post-dinner (or perhaps post-breakfast?), no water or rinsing required. Colgate Wisps Optic White Cool Mint ($12 for a pack of 24), at amazon.com. READ MORE: 5 things you didn't know about your Clarisonic

5. Set your makeup.

6. Add volume to hair.

When you’re out, the fastest way to fix hair that’s fallen flat against your face is to run a brush through it. Also good for brushing out curls that were supposed to fall into Gisele-like waves, but still haven’t as you’re pulling up to the restaurant. Tangle Teezer Compact Styler in Gold ($25), at sephora.ca. READ MORE: The most soothing hair products
