You can never go wrong with a soft and pretty colour palette for spring. But the watery hues seen at Prabal Gurung and Badgley Mischka can also be a bold choice this season, depending on how you wear them. Here’s five ways to try the pastel makeup spring beauty trend.

1. Choose your pastel makeup colour palette.

“There are two ways to wear pastel makeup,” explains Sabrina Rinaldi, Toronto-based celeb makeup artist. You can ease into this fresh spring beauty trend with a pale pink lip and classic black cat eye, she says. “Or you can wear it all over!” Think mint green or lavender eye shadow, soft peach cheek and full-on lilac lip. “It can go both ways,” she says.

2. Play with soft washes of colour.

The beauty of pastels is that you can subtly wear varying hues without it being too overwhelming. “A pale pink lip is flattering on most,” says Rinaldi, while a lilac shade looks great on darker skin tones. But if you’re wearing colour on the lip and eyes, skip out on blush to keep the look modern. “Try highlighter and bronzer for a fresh take instead,” says Rinaldi. “But no obvious colour.”

3. Mix up your textures.

To avoid a flat, washed-out look, try wearing both shimmery and matte formulations of pastel makeup shades in one look— think a metallic eye shadow with a glossy lip. Or try a creamy pale eye shadow and matte pink lip. Your call. And lightly fill in sparse eyebrows with a pencil. “A strong brow contrasts the softness of pastel makeup,” says Rinaldi.

4. Update classic spring beauty looks.

“Try a classic cat eye in mint green,” says Rinaldi of recreating this timeless shape with a colourful twist. Or go for a soft wash of colour on the lid—try lilac eye shadow, a fan-favourite beauty look of Scarlett Johannson this spring—and bump it up with an indigo eye liner. “Something in the same colour family will add depth and intensity to the soft colour,” says Rinaldi.

5. Go for fresh, flawless-looking skin.
To complement the beautiful spring beauty palette of soft colours on the face, keep skin natural and healthy looking. Avoid wearing too much powder, as matte skin will flatten the look. “Light foundation and spot treatment is perfect,” says Rinaldi.
