Being in a happy, healthy relationship can be one of life's many joys. Sharing the good, the bad and the ugly with a reliable partner can take the edge off a bad day or make a good day even better. But keeping things fresh and exciting isn't always easy. As the weeks turn into months, the months into years, it's all too common for couples too fall into a relationship rut. When you start to take your partner's presence for granted, you know it's time for a dose of damage control! So, how do you avoid the dreaded rut? We asked Canadian women how they keep their relationships fun and fresh. Here's what they had to say:

"Keeping it fresh and fun is definitely key! And showing your interest in him is something I bet a lot of women, myself included, take for granted. Relationships thrive in the early stages because of how the other person makes us feel -- it's totally a selfish thing. They make us feel pretty, sexy, desired, whatever it is ... and that makes us feel good. It's the same for men. The other big thing that I've found is not giving in to jealousy, which is absolutely a relationship killer. Men love confidence and when we express jealousy they can read it as not just a lack of confidence, but also perhaps as being "too attached" -- which often translates into him running for the hills." – Alyssa Stuart

"It's all about making choices. Every day, you have to actively choose your partner as your one and only. Love is not passive so you must take action. It frames the whole relationship as a thoughtful series of decisions instead of an ambivalent acceptance of status quo. And keep laughing -- at yourself and each other." – Colleen Seto

"Bill and I are consistently experiencing new things together. Last year we learned to rollerblade. We'll cook crazy new things from the grocery store. We venture into back-alley restaurants purely for entertainment. And we talk: often we'll sit and solve the woes of the world over wine (lots of wine!). We share experiences and communicate well, and this has worked for over 5 years." – Colleen Tully
