Conquer common couple crises and better your relationship.

By Heather Camlot

The secret to sticking to your New Year's resolutions is the same as keeping a relationship going -- commitment. This year, resolve to better and strengthen your relationship with our six-part plan.

This year, I resolve to …

Get financially fit

Financial difficulties are one of the most common problems in relationships. If he always pays, pick up the tab the next time you go for dinner. If you don't earn as much, then suggest splitting the bill or taking turns -- just don't make it the Ritz on his nights and McDonalds on yours. Monetary difficulties can get even more harried once you're living together. Sit down and discuss your financial philosophies. Then figure out the steps to monetary happiness -- open a joint account for household expenses based on a percentage of your salaries, for example.

Bring back the romance

If the fire seems to have gone out of the relationship (and even if it hasn't), don't wait for your partner to make the first amorous move. Plan a romantic evening, be it at home or at a hotel, with chilled champagne, a gourmet dinner and some fun "activities". If you have the time and the money, plan a weekend getaway to wine country or a spa -- whatever you choose, be sure it's something you'll both enjoy.
