Jet-set tête-à-tête

Elizabeth Hurley and David Furnish chat about her fairy-tale wedding, her beauty secrets and love at first sight.

By David Furnish

Forget the runway! We roam Canada to check out your trendsetting street style! Check out the video here!

After my civil partnership to Elton, we were both surprised by how different things feel for us now: we feel so much more content and secure. How is married life treating you?
"We do feel different. I feel much more comfortable making long-term plans now. In retrospect, living with someone with no commitment from either side was unsatisfactory in some ways -- there was always something missing."

Even though you're a married woman now, am I still your favourite date? "Of course! You'll always be my favourite date! We have been to so many things together. Your closest rival, though, is Patrick Cox, who stands in for you in your absence."

Judging by how beautiful you looked at Elton's 60th birthday in New York, I have to say that marriage agrees with you. Both Elton and I were blown away when you walked into the church. In that white gown with your hair pulled back, you looked like a young Elizabeth Taylor. Who made the gown?
"Thank you! It was a Versace dress that I saw at the show in Milan a few weeks before the wedding. As soon as I saw it, I said, 'Elton's 60th!' and ran backstage and begged Donatella to let me take it home with me."

Can you remember when you first met Arun? Was it love at first sight?
"I thought he was very goodlooking, but we hardly spoke. The second time I saw him, he asked me out on a date, which put me into a paroxysm of nerves because I hadn't been on a date in 15 years."

One of the many things I love about Arun is how beautiful he is with Damian. He has been such a brilliant role model for him.
"Arun has been in Damian's life since he was nine months old, which means that Damian can't remember life without him. They get on just like any other father and son, and both vie for Mummy's attention the whole time!"

People who know that we're friends are always asking me what you eat. They are under the impression that you starve yourself when, in fact, I know the opposite is true. Do you remember that idiotic article in the
British press that said you were living on six raisins a day? The irony is, you really enjoy your food -- that's another thing that you and I have in common.

"I am the person who is least likely to have an eating disorder. I eat a lot and have to constantly hold back or I could easily be a few dress sizes bigger. As it is, I weigh 10 pounds more than I did before Damian. I simply don't have the discipline to be that thin anymore. I love food, and I love cooking. I cook just about all of Damian's food, and we always make a cake together on Saturdays."

Do you have a diet and exercise regimen?
"Before the wedding, I took pilates classes and watched what I ate. It worked, and I toned up a lot. Since then, though, I've slipped by the wayside a bit. When I'm very busy running my beachwear company, I don't really have time to eat properly, and I eat a lot of sandwiches and snacks at my desk and then eat standing up at the fridge at night -- this is neither civilized, healthy nor slimming! I am hoping that my time at Chiva-Som will kick-start some healthier habits."

It seems like we both live on airplanes. How do you keep yourself looking so well when you move around so much?
"Sleep is my secret weapon. I try to sleep on planes as much as I can. I also have a brilliant acupuncturist who sorts me out when I get home to Britain. I'm always tired, and I could sleep anywhere, anytime. I sleep for the whole of plane journeys and go to bed with Damian at seven o'clock a few times a month. Juggling everything is tough, but, luckily, I love everything I do."

What's your biggest guilty pleasure?
"When Arun is away, I run a bath with Jo Malone bath oil and read for half an hour once I've put Damian to bed. I love it!"

How's the bikini business?
"Business is excellent but exhausting. We're growing steadily, and women love our stuff. We take a lot of care to design swimwear and cover-ups that make women feel as confident as possible on the beach, and I think women appreciate that."
