Hampshire, England-born Elizabeth Hurley and Toronto-born David Furnish became fast friends after meeting at a fashion photo shoot. Since then, both of their careers have been on a tear. In 1995, Hurley signed with Estée Lauder, and she has been a spokesmodel for the company for 12 years. Together with Evelyn Lauder, Hurley has raised awareness and funds to support breast cancer research. Holt Renfrew has partnered with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation -- which has raised more than $180 million to fund research to date -- and is offering the sexy pink Holt Renfrew Private Brand cashmere hoodie that Hurley so fetchingly wears on our cover this month. All funds from the sale will benefit breast cancer research and awareness programs in Canada. Ever the jet-setter, Hurley will make a personal appearance at the Holt Renfrew store in Vancouver on October 2.
I feel like I've known you forever. Can you remember when we first met? "Of course! At that terrifying Versace shoot in New York with Richard Avedon. You and Elton joined us for lunch, and I was tongue-tied. Then we bonded when I was seated next to you at a dinner in Gianni's New York townhouse. We had an excellent gossip and got on really well. Then you and Elton invited me and Hugh to stay with you in the south of France after the Cannes Film Festival."
Should we tell ELLE Canada readers the nicknames we have for each other? "I'm sure they can guess yours. I call you Spoilt Boy because you are, and you call me Jealous Girl because I am. When I first went to your house in Nice, you claim I stalked around, breathing 'It's just not fair' every minute or so…."
It has been a crazy year for both of us: two weddings for you, and I was in charge of planning two 60th-birthday parties for Elton. Are you exhausted? "I am shattered beyond belief -- I haven't stopped. I've been working like a dog to catch up on the time I took off to get married! I'm actually going to a fabulous health spa in Thailand called Chiva-Som, where I intend to do nothing but eat healthy and exercise."
It was a beautiful and amazing journey -- first seeing you get married at Sudeley and then spending that unbelievable week in India. I felt like I had stepped into a Bollywood movie. What were some of the highlights for you? "Both weddings seem like they took place years ago -- even though it was only a few months ago. I adored every moment of them, but I haven't had the strength to look through the photographs or the video. I'm planning to have a blitz in August, when I spend time on my farm. The highlight of the English wedding was Elton's speech -- it was so moving, he made me sob. In India, it was probably being carried up the stone steps of the fort, all the way to the ramparts. It was magical."
I loved spending time with you before you tied the knot at Sudeley, watching the blushing bride get ready. It was a really special moment for me. "Well, you've seen me in my curlers so many times! It feels very natural for us to be together during stressful or special times -- after all, you had me stay with you for the first six weeks after I had Damian."
My most vivid memory is seeing you and Arun being carried on sedan chairs to the top of that magnificent fort in Jodhpur. I've never seen so many flowers in my life -- and living with Elton, I've seen a lot of flowers! "How funny that we both have the same special memory! It was an unbelievable end to an amazing week: when we got to the top and fireworks exploded over the city of Jodhpur. Unbeknownst to all the guests, my sister was being proposed to by her boyfriend -- they're getting married in September."
