Each new cycle of the fashion season touts a different style of jean you just have to have. From skinny's, to wide-leg to flares, sourcing the perfect pair can be tricky. That's why we brought in denim designer Jason Trotzuk of Canadian label Fidelity to help find the fit for you.
My body tells no lies
You have to start with a realistic determination of your body type, says Trotzuk. There are multiple great styles that can work for any body, but not everything will work on everybody; be honest with yourself and your image. Next, prepare to invest in a pair of high quality jeans. A superior jean is arguably the most versatile, long-lasting and useful item in a woman's closet. Look for the three essential characteristics of any great jean: Fabric, fit and finish.
Booty basics
A good pair of jeans should always give you a great backside shape. No matter your bottom type, a good pair of jeans should hold and cup your derriere comfortably, says Trotzuk. It should not be baggy, saggy or have extra fabric at the bottom of your seat.
Pocket placement
One of the keys to a great backside fit, says Trotzuk, is pocket placement and size. Small pockets can make the bottom look bigger, while large pockets fill more space and minimizes highlighting the backside area. Pocket placement should be a healthy medium-size and centered evenly on each side. Be careful to notice that the pockets are not too close to the center, too high or too low; all of these will give unflattering illusions.
Thin thighs
If you want jeans to give you the look of thin thighs, then you must pay attention to the design of the outseam (the seam that sits on your outer thigh). The key here is to gently hug and shape the thigh, eliminating any excess fabric and bulkiness. Secondly, the outseam should be brought toward the front of the jeans to give the impression of a slimmer, more stream-lined leg, he says.
Right rise
Forget denim trends for a moment, says Trotzuk and know that rise height is very important for a good fit. The key to finding the right rise is comfort! Jeans come in many rises, but generally you should look within a range of 7"-8" in front and 12.5"-13.5" in the back.
Suggested sweep
The "sweep" refers to the opening at the bottom of the leg. The rule of thumb, he says, is a flare should be at 20" or wider, a boot 18", a straight leg at 16" and a great skinny at 14". Flare tends to lend itself to an overall dressier look so should generally be worn with heels to help elongate the leg. Although women tend to think a flare is slimming to the thighs, it can often shorten the legs, so take out those stilettos! Boot cuts are classic and the most versatile; it can be worn almost any way. Straight leg and skinny's are fresh and stylish, but look best on tall, athletic, slim body types.
Body basics
* A great pair of jeans should be made of high-quality ring spun denims, pure indigo dyes and quality lycra/spandex for superior hold and shaping. A quality denim should last a long time, have great visual character, color, and should hold its shape after several washings. Be careful, warns Trotzuk, just because a jean is expensive, does not mean it is high quality. The best way to determine this? Touch the denim; the average hand will be able to a quality denim is differentiate a superior brand from the average.
* Denim weight is also important when shopping for a great pair of jeans. Denim comes in many weights, but an 11.5 oz is generally the perfect weight for most people: it is light, comfortable, non-restricting, washes well and creates excellent construction.
* Darker washes are slimming and boot-cuts are timeless, so opt for those when looking to buy a new pair for the season. Although coloured denim is a hot trend right now, it shouldn't break the bank because they are so seasonal. Trotzuk recommends trying several colours before making a choice. Find what works for you!
